Perfect Honeymoon ❤️❤️

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 19, 2019via mobile
The Gayana Marine Resort is a fantastic. Crystal green sea waters full of colored fishes, fantastic sunsets and sunrises, delicious food and above all a truly great service. Karl Sims and his staff are super friendly and always ready to assist guests with a smile. For a perfect Honeymoon I recommend that you stay at the Palm Villla, very spacious rooms on the ocean with glass floor, its own deck and a pool outside (also a pool inside). Very romantic ❤️❤️. For dinner I recommend the Alo Alo restaurant and I suggest you ask for Shafiq, who will love to make recommendations for food and serve you.

We arrived in the heat and we're greeted with icy cold drink and everything was organised and we had a smooth check in. The breeze suite were connected and we could have our own space with a door linking to the kids room. The room was clean and with daily cleaning and tidy service. We did daily snorkelling and saw the giant clams they protected. We even enjoy the trip to sister hotel Bungaraya where the beach is even more clean and clear. It was a relaxed and fun holiday and the kids just love it. Thank you for all the staff in Gayana Marine Resort who always greet us with a friendly smile.

Dear Alice,

We are very happy and grateful to read your comments about your nice experience at our Beautiful Resort! We strive very hard to give our guests unique experiences and it all starts with a refreshing welcome drink and a cool face towel to refresh you upon arrival.

From that moment onwards experiences are so many and, as you well point out, we appreciate the nice recognition towards our Marine Ecology Research Centre (MERC) and to all the effort it does in preserving our giant clams.

We have shared with all our team your appreciation and recognition to their hard work and smiles and we all look forward in seeing you again with us for more experiences.

Thank you from all the Gayana Marine Resort Team!

I nearly cancelled my booking when I read the reviews on this hotel. I'm very pleased that I didn't as it is good, ignore the bad reviews posted here.

Pros:
The pool is great as is the food in both restaurants. Great 7pm cocktail each night of your stay.
Rooms are very spacious, have a balcony and ours overlooked the jungle with Hornbills to look at each morning. Beds are big and comfy.
You get a re usable bottle to use during your stay and can take it home.
Fabulous breakfasts of pancakes, eggs etc.
Free kayaks and snorkels each day to use.
There is also a great presentation twice a day on the work they are doing to re generate the giant clam, of which we saw lots in the sea.
Free transfer to the sister hotel for the day, where you can rent glass bottom boats, the snorkelling is amazing with blue coral here.
You can also have your 7pm cocktail here and then return on the boat to Gayana.

Cons:

You need to keep your balcony doors locked, because of the monkeys. But we only saw them twice. The hotel has managed to deal with the over active monkey problem and re located the Alpha one to another part of the island. We spent so much time in the sea and by the pool that having our balcony doors shut didn't bother us.

The pool is in need of an upgrade but is still very nice to swim in and has an amazing view of the sea. It's just tired rather than anything wrong with it. The new Site Manager has plans for an upgrade.

The rubbish that people talk about is NOT an issue here in my opinion. They have put a cordon off section in the sea which stops any rubbish slipping over into the bay area. There is a huge area to swim and it doesn't affect your trip.

The key problem is that in this part of Asia there is rubbish in the sea EVERYWHERE, it's not the hotels fault. The staff DO pick up any rubbish that slips over the cordon. Rubbish and single use plastic is a huge issue in Asia and is very sad as it's so beautiful there, but don't let that stop you from visiting.

We really enjoyed our time at Gayana Marine Resort. It's very relaxing with swimming, snorkelling and relaxing to do. Very little else. We had 3 nights there which was long enough. it's worth visiting the sister hotel along the coast as the snorkelling is better there, but there were more jellyfish.

Overall a great stay. We got up for sunrise one morning and saw Mt Kinabalu in the background. Staff are very friendly, food is good. Loved Borneo

Located on a nice island just 15 min outside Kota Kinabalu. Expensive (;2300 MYR per night), but despite the price you have either to pay 159 MYR for the boat trip or take the shuttle which only operates a few times a day!

The accommodation is nice, but although there are two bathrooms the water heaters cannot run at the same time! We were carefully instructed to close all windows and doors due the monkeys. However, the rubbish bin in the administration building next door was not locked. As a consequence, there was rubbish all over place including in the water where we were supposed to swim!

The resort has two restaurants. The Asian is nice, whereas the fish restaurant is a disaster. We ordered a bottle of wine, but when served we noticed it was a different one - without the waiter informed us. When asked, he just replied that they had run out of the other one - and this one was 100 MYR extra! Also the main course (fish) was served while we were having starters - so it became cold in the meantime.

The bar is nice and serve free pre-dinner drink. However, the bar is understaffed with a long waiting time.

Diving is excellent, equipment top class, staff friendly and skilled.

In conclusion, the standard of this resort is far below the price they charge. Poor value for lots of your money!

Dear Valued Guest,

It was a great pleasure to have you with us and to read that you enjoyed your dives and had a good experience at our Dive Center. Our Reefs and corals are surely worth a visit!

We are sad to read about your experience at our award wining Alu Alu restaurant and we apologize for the bottle of wine incident and about your main course being served earlier than expected. We strive very hard to give our best to our guests!

Our administration building has been repainted after your departure and we are sure it would now meet your expectations! Still, we will always encourage our guests to not leave food easily accessible to the wildlife that surrounds us.

We hope we can have you visit us again soon and this time not only meet but exceed your expectations if you decide to visit our lovely Borneo Again!

We utterly love Gaya Island and had stayed here before at a different resort. This time we decided to give Gayana Marine Resort a go, and had a great time. The chalets are really cute, and the sound of the water sloshing against rocks at night is really relaxing. There is plenty of wildlife around - macaques and oriental pied hornbills frequented trees right about our chalet (and sometimes even visited our balcony!). The marine life, of course, is spectacular.

Rooms are certainly comfortable. Everything is very pricey though - 27 ringgit for a simple pot of tea with a herbal teabag in it, for example. We did have a bit of a disappointing experience at the restaurant one lunch - we waited over 45 minutes for a pizza that we ordered, but it never came. The server apologised when we followed up, saying he forgot the order - which is fine, of course, however we were then advised that it would be another 30 minute wait (there was only us and one other table filled, so we weren't too sure why it would take so long). We asked if we could have it delivered to our room (I was full of the flu and ready for a rest), and they said there would be a charge for that. We thought it would have been nice if they waived the service charge, or offered a free drink or something as a gesture of goodwill, but they didn't. I just thought the customer service side of things could be handled a bit better.

Wifi is not available in the rooms, but you can get it at the restaurants and bar - however it is not very good.
