“Relaxed but popular during high season”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

Hyams Beach Cafe was our closest coffee shop during the 3 years we lived at Jervis Bay. A wonderful place to relax on a weekend for brunch - love the bacon and egg sandwiches with chilli jam. Great for the kids with nice smoothies and baby chinos. Friendly staff and owners often present. Not too noisy, even with children there. Nice coffee, tasty fish and chips, good home made cakes and muffins.

Having said all this, we were lucky to be able to visit during non-holiday periods - during school holidays, public holidays, summer generally, the Hyams Beach Cafe is unbearably crowded and busy. Absolutely avoid unless you like long waits, not tables and a bustling atmosphere .... But at any other time, we found nothing else like this around Jervis Bay.

“What is customer service??????”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

rude blonde girl with glasses and buck teeth! Each time she spoke she was facing away from me so I couldn't hear her when asking if they had sugar for my coffee and complete lack of communication to let me know that takeaway customers need to wait outside. Waited 20 minutes for a takeaway item to be zapped in the microwave and then not given any cutlery to eat it. She called out my number again with her back turned to me, i let her know i was standing behind her and she put it on the servery window outside anyway. was so insulted by her lack of manners and rudeness, get rid of her and get another teenager who wants to work! The food was however terrific!

“Inflexible monopoly”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

We came in for an emergency small child feed at 3.01 pm. We were turned away because "the kitchen is closed at 3", So it was no longer to get plain pasta for my daughter (never mind the adults). It appears that the young ladies there might have never experienced tha level of food urgency that comes in this situation and were not sat all empathetic of having to drive an unknown distance to a next feeding point. We did get a microwaved lasagna with roasted vegies not quite fit for a child. A terribly disappointing experience, especially since the first impression was so good. I guess that's the right of monopolies: their service is rarely based on empathy.

“Catch of the Day”
Reviewed April 17, 2013 via mobile

Ate at Hyam's Beach Cafe with my wife and three kids for lunch mid-week during school holidays in April 2013. We arrived at about 1pm, and cafe was busy, but our waitress - a friendly and professional young woman with a North American accent - was able to find us a seat.

The decor was simple and classy. White walls with pictures. Tiled floor. Laminated tables and chairs. Spacious enough to be able to have a reasonable conversation.

We all had the fresh locally caught beer battered fish and chips. Also a hot chocolate, a couple of caramel milkshakes and a kid's sized choc shake.

The fish was tender, the batter crisp. The chips were appropriately golden and crunchy. There was a coleslaw and greens on the side - fresh and tasty. It was topped off with nice zesty tartare sauce, and a wedge of lemon. The kid's sized fish and chips was barely smaller than the adult one! All round, the food got a big fat seal of approval.

Shakes and hot choc were also really good.

The food took a while to come out, but there was a big party alongside us that ordered just before we did, and the wait wasn't unacceptably long. (The other table also seemed to be pretty happy with their meals).

The bill came to just over $100, not too bad for a party of five, given the quality of the food.

Overall, a very good lunch. Recommended.

“Short Staffed”
Reviewed April 13, 2013

Visited on a Sunday and was extremely busy, which provides an indicator of the popularity. Good coffee and meal but a shortage of staff was a disappointment.
