We visited the blackbird cafe for Mother's Day and were very disappointed. They were clearly unprepared for the occasion. The menus were printed out on a dirty, old piece of paper, staff were unwilling to make adjustments to accommodate customers and the unclean tables and chairs were just the beginning. We waited 40 mins for coffee and juice, breakfast was warm at best and hardly worth the money we paid. We would not recommend this place to anyone who wants a decent meal and good service.

Came here, mainly out of curiosity and I have to say I was really pleased.
When I ordered I spoke to the chef who explained what was in the pastries (I'm a fussy eater). All fresh ingredients and they tasted divine!

So if you are in the area, pop in. You won't be disappointed.

I really enjoyed the different menu that Blackbird offers compared to other local cafe's. The produce was fresh and clean and locally sourced where possible. The presentation was remarkable. We had two brunch dishes of bacon & eggs and smoked trout & eggs. Both came with generous sides of roasted tomatoes, fresh rocket, mushrooms and of course, handmade bread. Coffees were good but a little mild for me. Service was good, though somewhat relaxed. Some minor adjustments here would be a benefit. Others have remarked on the decor - I simply interpreted it as uncluttered and simple.
The cafe also has a range of handmade specialty products such as caramel used sherry vinegar. Overall, a lovely change from the boring standard fare at many other local cafe's. I will be back!

The Blackbird Cafe is quickly becoming one of my favourite eateries.
Fresh food, top quality ingredients, amazing cheese, home-baked bread and good coffee. Really worth a visit.
Service is a bit slow, but this cafe is not a fast food outlet, so I am fine with this.
The staff is friendly though the young ones are still learning the job.
Still, you don't often find a cafe with partridge on the menu!

Last but not least the mains on the menu are reasonably priced, given the quality of the food, this is really good value for money.

This place has a good concept and location, but needs some serious work on the attitude of the staff.

This eatery is next to the Maitland Goal so it has a bit of a captive clientelle. Given that tours of the jail finish at around lunch time, you would expect a bit of an increase in patronage about that time.
When we (8 people) arrived after a tour, there were only six people already there and three staff. However, there weren't enough menus to go around so we had to wait until the other table had ordered before we were given a worn peiece of paper that passed for a menu.
When the waitress finally came to take our orders she apologised that there would be a bit of a wait as they were very busy !!
When the food arrived we had the (what is now seems to becoming standard) "who ordered the ...".

The food was actually very nice, and presented in a novel way, as the ingredients for a sandwich nicely laid out on a bread board. But only two slices of bread which weren't enough for the amount of salad.

It was great to see the cook pick fresh herbs from outside. Its just a shame that birds were roosting in the tree above and the herbs went straight onto the salads without washing.

The problem main problem though was that the chicken and avocado salad came without the avocado and the ham and cheese came without the cheese.
When I went to request the missing ingredients, the response was downright rude. The cook saying that she advised us that the avocado was not good when we ordered - but she hadn't taken our orders.

She then turned up at the table with half an avocado - said "See I told you it was brown" and proceeded to scoop out a spoonful and drop it onto each plate. The cheese turned up in a block which she held in one ungloved hand and shaved off a couple of slices onto appropriate plates.

One missed order didn't help either. But did produce an angry response from the waitress who bought her order form out to show that order had not been made - though all of us remember the order being given -she had obviously not written it down but was prepared to argue the point with the customer.

Once they get themselves organised so they can cope with a restaurant more than a quarter full, and get the staff off the grumpy pills, it will be well worth a visit.
