Vagabond Cafe is my first choice in a town filled with great cafes. The vibe is civilised without pretense; the service, friendly without feeling invasive. It's easy. It's comfortable. You're more likely to find friends engaging in quiet conversation at tables inside and out, or see small groups in meetings. Given the free wi-fi, it's a great place for anyone who works from home to take a meeting. Rarely is there a toddler whining within earshot and, with newly expanded seating space, there is almost always a quiet spot. The decor is clean and funky-eclectic with a nod to owner Chris' cycling victories. Thank God there are no sad, squeaky sofas with questionable upholstery as is the case in places trying to reinvent coffee houses that beg for bongo drums or Ginsberg poems. Flip-flops and bike shorts are far more common than berets or bad attitudes.
Let's face it, though, it's really about the coffee, right? Yes, there is a beautiful selection of cabinet food including delicious gluten-free choices. Yes, they have tea and soft drinks - but for me it's about the perfect coffee... in my case, a Trim Flat White. Vagabond features Atomic Coffee, which is rich, full-bodied, not bitter and nothing short of the perfect jolt. Having lived in New Zealand, land of the ambrosial Flat White, for nearly a year, I've catapulted from American coffee enthusiast to a flat out coffee snob. Vagabond delights with a menu sure to satisfy caffeine addicts and anyone else looking for a casual, tasty drink or bite.
