“A great get-away for diving”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2014

We were a little apprehensive after having read some of the reviews that had been posted for this place, but we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. As another reviewer said about this place, if you're looking for a 5-star place with all of the amenities then don't go to Roatan.
The staff there are great and go out-of-their way to be helpful. Our room was nice (except we had to run the hot water for about 5 minutes to get a warm shower) and the housekeeping staff did a wonderful job every day. Maintenance (or upgrading) work is still in progress but it doesn't interfere with normal operations of the place. Food is alright and we always found something that we liked. The selection of food is minimal and there are no signs indicating what food is, but other-than-that it was alright (remember this is not a 5-star). The only time that food is available (other than special requests for a cost) is at meal times and there is no snack bar there.
The beach is kept clean but I suspect that we hit the Sand Flee season as everyone brought home some itchy dots as well as a tan (this was the same for people staying at other resorts as well). There is no beach service so you'll have to fend for yourself and go to the bar if you want a drink.
Good snorkeling can be had right in the protected bay right in front of the resort and you can see some replica Mayan Ruins in about 15 feet of water right off the beach.
Diving is fantastic with many, many dive spots within a couple of minute boat ride of the dive shop. The dive staff are all great and cannot do enough for you. If you're a diver, then look into the dive package, it will be well worth it.
This is a great place for divers and a nice spot to go to unwind.

Room Tip: It would seem that the hot water tank of near the lobby, so a room close to there would help get you...

This is our 4th visit to Fantasy Isl. Resort. From the reviews previously posted, we had low expectations but we were pleasantly surprised. The meals did not have a lot of selection but with the small number of patrons that were there that is expected but the meals were good and varied thru out the week. Service was excellent and the employees were friendly and courteous. The facility does need a lot of TLC, maintenance and updating. Beach was fantastic and snorkeling couldn't be better for seeing marine life. The bar and staff were just great.
The dive shop and staff are just fantastic and we wouldn't expect anything less from these great people. The diving was great. The weather wasn't perfect and bugs were hell but can't blame that on Fantasy Isl. Resort. There were 7 in our party (4 divers - 3 snorkelers) and all in all we had a great time.

We spent 7 weeks on our yacht in Fantasy Island marina, and it was a superb experience. The location is fantastic, the dock master (Jerry) bends over backwards for cruisers, and overall the marina is good, with lots of activity organized in a communal way.
Exception is where the hotel side of management is involved. The hotel is rather run down, water supply is disastrous, and service quite unfriendly. What a pity to let such a prime location go to waste (hotel side), and what a pleasure to be in the marina.
Only come here on a boat!

Room Tip: All above ratings are for the marina only. It would be one star for the hotel in pretty much every c...

Our large dive group did an all inclusive trip. This included basic drinks, 3 buffet meals per day, and 3 boat dives per day. I would give the dive operations a 5 star and the resort 3 star if I could.

The resort grounds are secluded and very nice with a pretty, protected beach cove with a snorkeling park and a ship wreck and airplane wreck accessible from the beach or they will drop you by boat.

The staff was very nice and very helpful throughout from the room, desk, bar, restaurant, and dive staff. No complaints from me for any of these people. They all worked long and hard yet were pleasant and smiling all of the time.

This place is a good value type resort, not fancy. The rooms are basic and the beds are a bit hard. The food was average but always something decent with fruit and desserts always available. They also did a big Thanksgiving night dinner party for us. My room had hot water but low pressure. Some other rooms had pressure but warm water. There were also two water outages while we were there but at least one was caused by a big storm. One of their two wells produces water that is a bit salty. You should not drink the faucet water anyway but the slight salt is sometimes noticeable in the shower. Finally, the internet was pretty spotty and generally not available in most of the rooms. This is probably my biggest complaint as it is an easy thing to fix. Internet in the lobby/bar area is pretty decent.

Remember, this is in the Caribbean in a developing nation - have appropriate expectations and you'll have a great time.

I gave a review before and this is an update and a summary. I just can't believe some of the reviews I read, we booked our trip based on promises of updates and new management....

1) Beach is nice looking and snorkeling is nice

Now the rest of the story
Half our group were down with diarrhea and vomiting and many others on the flight were too, the food and water and even the drinks are.... suspect .

1) There is no chance of a refund, discount or credit from Nolitours/Transat, offered a better room on the next visit... that will NEVER happen. I used going back to Roatan as a threat to get help picking a new place to go next time, I got alot of help fast, no one in our family ever wants to even go back to that island now!
2) Little sleep as the beds we slept in were uncomfortable frames help up by 2"x3" and one was broken. The roosters will wake you up at 5am and 6am every morning.
3) The room smelled moldy and the windows do not open to air the room out.
4) The room is run down (you can see my pictures from before)
5) The view was of an old boat dump and bushes.
6) The water from the tap was undrinkable do not let it even touch your tooth brush etc. and the food is only for a few hours each day and we got sick from either the food or water/drinks.
7) Watch out for staff giving you drinks were the ice is from the tap water it will turn salty.
8) The TV did not work all week and repeated requests were ignored ... with a smile.
9) The days it was not windy you got ate by bugs.
10) The boats going in and out make snorkeling actually dangerous and rather than slow down and wait they just yell rudely at you and zoom through.
11) The jelly fish larva/sea lice drove us out of the water a couple days.
12) The staff will lie to you about "extra charge" that are actually included, bus times and being able to change rooms. "come back at 1pm tomorrow" .... "oh the rooms are all full" ....
13) After almost a two hour wait another resort gave our group a ride and one suitcase survived the flight but was broken by the guy throwing... and I do mean throwing it into the back of the truck.
14) Monkeys will steal stuff off the deck and you can't leave the doors open to air out the room as the bugs and monkeys will get in.
15) Others in our flight complained about no hot water all week and we often had no water for several hours.... so picture diarrhea and not being able to flush for sometimes a couple hours.
16) There are other issues like the big groups from cruise ships and they seem to be dumping on the mainland side of the island as the bottom looks grey on that side of the island and the hose running out to the middle of the beach seems to be pumping something out there...???? and the huge pipe they were burying going out to the beach... ??? there is more but they are items I can't confirm.

So all in all, bad food, bad water, bad smelling rooms, bad beds.... I was too sick most of the week to do any diving but they seemed like nice guys when I talked to them the first day so I can't say anything about them.

Room Tip: At another resort

Fantasy Island is a relaxing, Diver's Paradise ! We spent 8 nights, enjoying all the resort had to offer and I highly recommend it to all who love the ocean.

This all-inclusive room/food/alcohol/diving package is affordable and you get a lot of bang for your buck!

The resort is under new management, and they are remodeling the property, so I highly recommend getting an updated room. Am confident most, if not all the rooms will be completed during 2014. Many of the staff have been there for years, and you can tell they love their jobs - the customer service was outstanding.

First, the diving .... The resort's dive shop has rental gear, a fleet of well-maintained dive boats, and the crew is outstanding ! Darren and Mark were our dive guides, and Pedro, our captain have been in these waters all their lives and it really shows ! They really took good care of any divers needing help, and safety was their foremost concern. The ocean is calm most days, and although we had some weather, the critter encounters were awesome ... from seahorses, to big black groupers off the wall, free-swimming eels, and lionfish hunting for those brave enough. Especially cool was a solefish that was only 2.5 inches long fluttering in the sand. Unlike the other resorts, you get 3 boat dives each day. On request, they will drop you at the Prince Albert Wreck on the way back, and you can leave your tank at the gazebo when you finish. Shore diving from the gazebo is allowed anytime you wish. Boat night dive was available, but I like my wine after dinner .....

There is nitrox available, with a small upcharge.

The food was plentiful and good. The daily soup was a real highlight, varied and delicious! Fresh fruit and salad bar, and buffet style hot foods included a few gourmet items, but mostly it is just good down-home kind of cooking. Thanksgiving dinner included turkey as well as many other items, and entertainment. We even sampled the lionfish filet, very tasty .... we have to control this invasive specie, and I can't think of a better way.

Speaking of entertainment .... the juggler, Victor was excellent !

I also highly recommend a massage from Loretta - great relaxation after a full day of diving, or if you get rained out. If you are expecting a 5 star resort this is not the place for you .... but if you like your luxury underwater and want good room, good food and plenty of it, and a relaxing vacation, this is the resort for you !!

Room Tip: I always enjoy a view of the ocean ....

My husband and I just got back from a seven day trip to Roatan. We booked an all inclusive package with the Fantasy Island resort and had a great time. The staff is super friendly and always went out of their way to help with any special requests or answer any questions. During mealtime, the staff brings you unlimited drinks. The food is alright - it's a buffet and can start to be tiring after awhile but I always found something I could eat during each meal.

The diving crew is outstanding. The head DM, Daryn, is a great easygoing DM. He always made sure to point out the interesting and unusual items on the dive and was very relaxed about us lagging behind the group to take pictures or look closer at things. We were there during a very rainy season so the visibility was not amazing but the reef still had a lot of color and we saw quite a few seahorses. The only thing I would advise the diver to beware of on the dives is the morary eels -- these eels are always out swimming and seem to not be afraid of the divers. Make sure to keep your hands close when they are nearby to avoid being bitten.

The dive operation is also super supportive with the beach dives - they'll even take you over to spots in the boat to start your beach dive. When you finish your dive at the nearby gazebo, you simply leave your tank there and walk back to the dive shop. The boat actually even came back and picked us up a few times. Right off the beach you can dive a really great wreck, an old airplane and a very nice wall which had a lot of life.

At the dive shop, they had a very secure locker area where we left our gear all week. It made it easy to bring it out and load it up for the three boat dives a day. The crew always provided fresh towels for both the morning dives and afternoon dive so you didn't even have to bring a towel on the boat.

We stayed in unit 103 - our unit was clean and comfy and the AC worked great. We had hot showers all week and fresh towels every day. They have a shuttle service available to take you into town and they also helped us arrange a shark diving trip with the Waihuka Dive Center.

On the resort itself lives an adorable family of white faced monkeys that will come right up and visit you (even crawl onto your shoulders if you let them) and there are birds, iquanas and other animals living on the property. I always felt very safe and secure on the property and didn't even bother to use the safe in our place.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who isn't expecting a 5 star experience for a 3 star price. If you've been affordably priced resorts in the Caribbean before, then you will not be disappointed by this place. A couple of tips if you decide to go:

- rooms on the 1st floor closer to the front desk seem to be nicer than rooms on the 2nd floor

- buy some snacks in town if you are the type of diver that gets super hungry in between dives. My husband and I made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that we ate in between dive 1 and dive 2. The boat had some fruit available but the sandwiches really worked well for us.

- the faucet water is filtered salt water. Buy a gallon of water to use to rinse your teeth after brushing.

- if you are going during the rainy season, bring a rain jacket to wear on the boat. If it's windy it can be especially cold, although the water was always warm.

- benadryl or other antihistamines are a must to help with any bug bites you might get
.
- there is a little island just next to this one that has a very interesting zoo on it with some really cool animals. Take the kayak out and paddle over there - you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 1st floor closer to the front desk seem to be nicer than rooms on the 2nd floor. We sta...
