“Great place, but room for improvement.”
Reviewed August 14, 2012

The Falcon Inn faces on to the village green in Arncliffe, a pretty village in the Littondale Valley. But despite the beautiful setting, for most people it’s probably one of those places you'll either love or hate. Personally, I think it’s a great place with good beer and friendly management. I've been going to The Falcon for years, generally when passing through the area, although recently my wife and I stayed over.
Our room was dated (tired) as we expected but nevertheless comfortable enough for our one night stay. Having said that it was clearly in need of a little TLC as numerous cobwebs suggested the cleaning could be better. In addition the toilet seat in our en-suite was loose and moved when sat on. So much so that in the morning I thought I'd use the loo down the landing, only to find it the same!
Our dinner in the evening was very good, although a choice of only one main is a little restrictive. After finishing our meal we began chatting to the table next to us as they had just finished theirs too. Within minutes the landlord interrupted our conversation to ask if we could move to the bar area so the tables could be reset for breakfast. We continued our chat in the bar and as my wife and a young lady in the other party were clearly feeling a little chilled, my wife asked if the coal fire could be lit, only to be told its the 3rd of August and the fire is for presentation only! We asked what time breakfast was in the morning "9 o'clock", which was later than we would have preferred, but there was no mention of any flexibility.
In summary, in my opinion a great place and well worth a visit. But there is definitely room for improvement. General maintenance and cleanliness could be better and the hospitality too. At times I couldn’t help but wonder if the current setup is designed more for the convenience of the landlord/landlady (Peter and Julie) rather than the comfort and satisfaction of their guests.
