I’m always rather pleased when the staff start by explaining that some of the dishes on the menu aren’t available. It’s a sign that the ingredients are fresh, and if they didn’t come in that day, or have already sold out, they won’t be digging into the freezer.
We were a party of seven, including two young children, which can often present a challenge to restaurants serving proper food. There was no children’s menu in evidence, and since our children need to learn to eat proper food we weren’t going to ask for one. Instead, they were happy to provide a steak and chips from the menu, split onto two plates. Perfect, and hugely appreciated by the small but fussy eaters in our party. (I’m not fussy myself, you must understand, but if I don’t like something you’ll hear about it)
For myself, I chose the assiette of salmon starter, and the Dover sole for main. Both were perfectly cooked and nicely presented. A chocolate desert finished off the meal nicely.
The staff are engaging and friendly, chatting amiably with parents and children alike, making everyone feel welcome.
Overall this is a nice place to come if you appreciate real food, fresh, home cooked and well presented, in a historic pub location. We’ll definitely be back to try some of the other dishes.
