My partner and I had a wonderful stay! We turned up unexpected and the lovely lady on reception was very friendly and helpful, we even got given an alarm clock with fresh batteries! The room was clean and comfortable, it felt very welcoming. Dinner and wine was lovely and in the end we were happy we got stuck there!

I'm amazed at reading some of the reviews on here that I stayed at the same place. I checked in a couple of weeks in advance for a single night with some friends, which cost me £100 for a 5 bed room. I thought this was slightly steep at the time, but reading some of the reviews- I thought it must have been a great location.

The room had terrible damp problems (there was an old de-humidifier that was constantly running) and black mould on the windows. The room smelt strongly of damp, the wallpaper was peeling and the window wouldn't open more than 2 inches to let the smell out. I could forgive these for a cheap room (£30 a night) but for the price I paid I would have expected at least the same level of quality as a decent B&B.

I was torn writing this as the staff couldn't have been more helpful, and the rest of the hostel looked nice- but in my experience the room let the whole experience down.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the downstairs room

Well penzance itself is a little disappointing but this hostel is set in nice grounds just out of town - a 20 minute-ish walk from the centre which hosts all the usual suspects on the high street and a large tesco at the east end of town is probably 25mins walk away.
The hostel is superb - offering everything you might need to self cater or dine in with a pleasant bar/cafe on the ground floor and in the old cellars a spacious well equipped self catering kitchen with adjoining largedining room.
The twin room I shared with my daughter was light bright well ventilated and comfortable with well designed bunk beds - good shelf/bed light etc, the room was quiet and I guess the showers and toilets are well soundproofed as we suffered no disturbance from the adjacent toilets etc.
The showers were all roomy and clean with adequate provision of shelves, hooks etc.
The whole hostel was spacious and clean and in the pleasant tv lounge there was payable wifi
as well as static computers - access to hostel booking website is free.
The staff most especially the manager were friendly and helpful - the manager was just a one off wonderful host and then some - a 5 star* gentleman.
The only drawback with hostel is that there did not seem to be many toilets on the ground floor.
Anyway the real joy of this hostel is that it is a good base to explore from - you could even walk to Marazion and St Michaels Mount if you wanted too.
TOP TIP for penzance is that the hostel organise fantastic value trips to performances at minack open air theatre.
Places we explored from penzance were
Newlyn and Mousehole - the pretty harbour village home of Stargazy Pie
Sennan - we walked along the coast path to Lands End, Sennan is lovely and path offered stunning views, Lands End visitor centre not quite as bad as expected and in fact fellow hostellers from Europe said they found the free bits full of interest
Lizard - we parked in the village centre and walked west to find the coast path which we followed round to the lifeboat station and back up through the pretty old village- even more stunning views
St Ives - parked and rode on the train from Lelant, St Ives is a really bustling buzzing Cornish seaside town with pretty harbour and loads of art galleries
Minack open air theatre and Porth Curno - in mid morning sun this has got to be the most stunning place in Cornwall - cliifs, topaz sea, golden sands..
Marazion and St Michaels Mount - what a gem, take the causeway or ferry to this fairy tale island with it's lovely castle and don't forget to take time to explore Marazion too
If planning a trip to Cornwall I thoroughly recommend this youth hostel which also offers camping facilities for real budget travellers.

Penzance Youth Hostel is very well equipped and comfortable, with good facilities including the self catering kitchen. The evening meals were good value and the staff were accommodating in serving me slightly after the usual hours.

This was our first time in a youth hostel but it felt more like a hotel! Really good value and there was a restaurant on site for breakfast and for evening meal and it's licensed. Well done to paul and his team we felt very welcome!
