Description: The George is an award-winning, traditional, dog-friendly, family-owned and operated 17th-century village pub. We serve fresh food prepared from local ingredients, including local meat, game and foraged foods. We grow our own veg, herbs and fruit and make our own ice creams as well! We are renowned for cooking fresh fish and seafood from the south coast -- some say our scallops are so good they are "to die for." And our locally reared meat is mouth-wateringly good. We have two craft beers produced exclusively for us, three other guest ales and eight local ciders. With a lovely beer garden for the summer and a log fire in the winter, families and dog-walkers are always welcome. We have four en-suite bedrooms for b&b and a multi-purpose self-contained function room and skittles alley. But most of all there is "... ALWAYS A FRIENDLY WELCOME."

“Pieextravaganza”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

My husband and I popped in here on a trip home, as I had been previously with neighbours (they rate it the best place to eat in the area). We both ate pies; mine was steak and ale, his hot game pie. My pie was chocked full of delicious meat and a great boozy taste, topped with a separately-cooked puff pastry lid, and served with 5 different vegetables. Husband’s pie was flavoured with juniper berries, chunks of game and was served with good sautéed potatoes in their skins. Having declined to have potatoes with mine, I did try one of my hubbies – it was good. Along with a couple of small drinks the bill was only £26 – bargain. We will definitely be back.
The only reason I have not given 5 stars is that there are only three parking slots outside the pub, which is on the main road to Shepton Mallet from Wells, otherwise one has to park rather precariously, or drive on if all the parking areas are full (as my neighbours have done). Just hope you are lucky!

Thanks for your comments, Carol I. Yes we serve very good food and drink here, and our lack of car parking lets us down.

I agree with you that busy nights are tricky with limited parking, and that people do drive by. They didn't plan car parks very well in the 17th century, and if we had a big car park this pub probably would have been owned by a mighty pub company and we wouldn't have the chance to invest our heart and soul into making it the place it is. So there's a silver lining at least.

Best regards,

Peter Graham

“Great pub food”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

We were staying at the bowlish house and accidently came across the George. At first I was little put off because we didn't book and sat at a table near the bar. However, the service from the waiter and waitress was excellent they were very friendly and helpful recommending their own brewed excellent local beer and the food(just plain burger and chips and steak and ale pie) was very good. Well done the traditional English pub good food well cooked and pleasant staff.

“good pub grub”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

a good welcome to a 'locals' pub. The service was very good and the food was freshly cooked. the pub was only 5 minutes away from our B&B which was ideal.

“As Always - Perfect.”
Reviewed March 29, 2014 via mobile

Visited The George again tonight. Food and ambience as good as ever. The place was buzzing with a mixture of locals with their dogs at the bar and the smartly dressed diners. Peter & Veryn (the genial hosts) in attendance . Our food came out perfectly cooked and of excellent quality. This a first class country pub and deserves it good reputation. You can't please everybody all of the time but you come pretty close. Well done !.
