Description: The George is an award-winning, traditional, dog-friendly, family-owned and operated 17th-century village pub. We serve fresh food prepared from local ingredients, including local meat, game and foraged foods. We grow our own veg, herbs and fruit and make our own ice creams as well! We are renowned for cooking fresh fish and seafood from the south coast -- some say our scallops are so good they are "to die for." And our locally reared meat is mouth-wateringly good. We have two craft beers produced exclusively for us, three other guest ales and eight local ciders. With a lovely beer garden for the summer and a log fire in the winter, families and dog-walkers are always welcome. We have four en-suite bedrooms for b&b and a multi-purpose self-contained function room and skittles alley. But most of all there is "... ALWAYS A FRIENDLY WELCOME."

After visiting Wells Cathedral on a very wet, windy day & cold day, I used the trusty Trip Advisor 'near me now' function to find somewhere suitable for Sunday lunch. Given the excellent Trip Advisor reviews I phoned to see of they were still serving at 2.15pm. They finish Sunday lunch service at 2.30pm but said that we'd still be welcome if we were nearby.
Excellent local ales, superb roast beef, roast pork and fish cakes were enjoyed by our party with generous bowls of steaming buttered veg, roasties and cauliflower cheese. Delicious gravy, all the condiments we needed followed by fantastic desserts: Crumble & custard, chocolate marmalade cake & delicious damson ice cream. Everything homemade. Everything delicious. Outstanding food, pub, hospitality, dogs allowed, very friendly staff team & an open fire. Really first class and a place I will definitely return to if I ever revisit this region.  High recommend.

Thank you HonestRB. We had been fully booked on the Sunday you called and were nearly done our service when you called. I'm very pleased I could fit you in, and when you were so appreciative on your arrival and throughout the meal, it really made it all worthwhile. We found some common ground not only in the food, but in our past travel experiences, and I enjoyed chatting with you and your family. In fact, it was the highlight of the day, and I've just received the promised recipies from your father. What a treat! Thank you again and looking forward to renewing an instant comraderie the next time you visit.

We stayed in Wells for 4 nights and dined at the George on 2 of them. Extremely friendly hosts, good real ale and excellent food on both our visits. Good value for money! There is nothing pretentious about this place and its all the better for it.

A traditional Christmas lunch was excellently presented for a party of 65, all courses being well presented, with delicious flavours and coordinated to ensure everyone was eating at the same time. This is the third year we have been to this restaurant for our Christmas lunch and Peter and Veryan the owners never fail to impress us with their excellent cuisine, ambience and service. It is also an extremely good restaurant at any time of the year not just at Christmas.

Good choice on the menu, we plumped for the 'Specials' and they really were. The best fish pie that I've had anywhere and a beef bourguignon that rivals those we've had in France. The chefs clearly take great care and pride in the sourcing, preparation and presentation of their dishes. Peter, the landlord and 'front of house' is both welcoming and attentive. There is a lovely warm atmosphere as soon as you walk in and it's not just from the open fires. Parking is tricky with just a few parking spaces outside but don't let this put you off; persevere and be rewarded.
