“Wonderful place with great views and food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

A group of 3 couples, one seasoned Nica traveler and two not so much. We stayed for 2 nights and could not have had a better time - it is peaceful, beautiful and very well kept. I recommend ordering off the menu rather than the meal plan - but the food was good and service warm and attentive. The road in is rugged, but worth the drive the views are truly spectacular. The owners are warm and very helpful.

Just a magical place on a magical island.

The trip to the island with a car on the ferry was chaotic as you may expect in a third world vista.
The drive to thehotel was paved roads with the excpetion of the last 3.2 km. The last 3.2km was very rough over the first half and would really require a four wheel drive with high clearance. This place has great views , food and staff. The room was very nice and presented views of both volcanos. This place sits in a high altitude so is refreshingly cooler. There is a negative edge pool that has terrific views and is very inviting.nthere are trails for nature walks and the sound of hollar monkeys in the distance is really cool.
Martin , the manager and owner is very helpful and we really enjoyed this place.

One note of caution is the toilet situation. In an effort to be Ecco friendly the toilets are composting toilets and there is a funnel involved and saw dust . Suffice to say this element is more like camping. The bathroom though with outdoor shower is completely its own room. It bothered me more than my wife, as the high hanging funnel was not a challenge for her. It was part of the overall experience ,so will not hold it against the place. Now I appreciate actual toilets all the more, so guess it was a good thing.
We do recommend Ecco lodge as a place to experience the island with creature comforts.

Room Tip: Ask fr one of the newer cabins as there have been some recent additions.

Totoco Eco-Lodge is a very interesting establishment. I've given it a 4.0 rating, which I see as an average. If you love nature and the outdoors and are willing to "rough it," Totoco merits a 5.0; if you are more of a city person who likes cushy accommodations, Totoco deserves a 3.0.

Pros: an incredible mountaintop setting, with amazing views of Concepción Volcano; a friendly and helpful staff; fresh, simple, well-prepared fare (don't expect culinary fireworks); and great hiking, both at the property -- it's right on the slopes of Maderas Volcano (Marlon is an excellent guide) -- or within driving distance, like the San Ramon waterfall (about 90 minutes away; not that far distance-wise, but the roads are awful).

Cons: the mountaintop setting is hard to reach, up a very rocky road (you need to hire a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get you there); the compost toilets are not for everyone (ugh, I was not a fan); the swimming pool is a bit chilly; and you are surrounded by nature, which has its downsides. (One night our room was invaded by ants, although they mysteriously vanished after we went to dinner and came back.)

If you are a fan of the ecolodge experience and know what you are getting into, I would definitely recommend Totoco.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Nim lodge, which has an amazing view of Concepción Volcano.

The staff is really friendly and welcoming. They try really hard to accommodate the guests but there are occasional glitches (the internet reception is bad but I don't think it's the hotel's fault). The composting toilets are surprisingly clean. I am giving this place 5 stars in the context of an eco resort in Nicaragua. The property is gorgeous and well done. You will find food, drinks and some other services are slightly more expensive vs else where.

Traveling with 2 other friends through Nicaragua, we took an overnight to Ometepe.
Our Granada hotel made all the arrangements which was great as it can be complicated
depending upon which part of Ometepe you want to visit and the ferry schedules. Totoco
is a gorgeous resort with a breath-taking view to the Maderas volcano. The accommodations are
very basic and nice and the food is very good especially given its remote location. I would have
given this a top rating, except that the driveway to Totoco is so difficult to navigate (by car, horse or on foot) that one loses incentive to do anything outside of the property once you have made the ambitious drive. If however you just wanted to hike around the property or horseback rode
which we did, it is no problem.

Room Tip: We were in Guanacaste which had a lovely view and was removed enough to allow for a massage on the...

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

We've just returned from our first trip to Nicaragua...and during our time there we spent an amazing two days on Ometepe...and stayed at Totoco. The excursion to Ometepe was a surprise to my girlfriend, who knew I had something planned, but didn't know what...we both like adventures, and the idea of staying on an island made up of volcanoes, in the middle of a huge lake, was too cool to pass up. A friend of mine had been to Totoco and gave it rave reviews, so when it came time to line up a place to stay I was very excited to find they had availability.

Ometepe offers a vast array of activities, from hiking, 4x4, horseback, canopy tours, etc...and Totoco makes it extremely easy to do anything you want while on the island. We didn't have a vehicle, so Totoco arranged for a driver to pick us up from the ferry and drive us to the lodge, which is literally located on the side of Maderas (the dormant volcano). Upon arriving to Totoco, we were checked in immediately, given a tour of the bar/restaurant/registration/pool area and shown our room, which was a private cabin, equipped w/ a large bed, hot shower, and private porch, with an unobstructed view of Concepcion Volcano on the far side of the island...it was utterly breath taking...and VERY comfortable. My girlfriend and I were blown away.

The kitchen prepared us a great lunch to go (sandwich/fruit/water), and we had a driver take us to the trail head of the waterfall on the far side of Maderas...got in a nice hike and were then taken back to Totoco for some late afternoon drinks and a couples massage on our porch as the sun was setting...i can't even begin to describe how beautiful it was. After the massage we had a great dinner in the restaurant (the menu changes daily) consisting of fresh fish, vegetables, salad, dessert and wine. Afterward we went back to our cabin, and had an amazing sleep w/ the cool breeze coming through our cabin...in the morning breakfast was a delight and afterward we left the lodge for another day of activities.

The service is absolutely unprecedented...they are a small lodge, so their attention isn't fragmented amongst hundreds of guests...you feel like you are being looked after personally, because you truly are. I was very keen to see a tarantula, and Martyn literally went and found one and brought it to us at our cabin so we could check it out. He was able to arrange for any and all activities we wanted to do while on Ometepe and got that massage set up for us about an hour...most hotels treat you like you're throwing them a curve ball when you ask for something...Martyn was expecting them and hitting it out of the park every time. The entire staff was super knowledgeable of the island and we couldn't have asked for a more efficient, easy to execute game plan during our brief stay on the island.

Can't say enough about this place, or the island, it was the highlight of an amazing week in Nicaragua and a place we will always reflect back on in the most positive way.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a room/building w/ a view of Concepcion!

It was interesting to stay in an eco-lodge especially the composting toilet. Its great that the rainforest is so close & the howler monkeys come right among the cabins. Our cabin was great with beautiful beds & a lovely hot shower. I didn't know that we'd need a 4 wheel drive car to get from the main road to the lodge so we had to leave our normal car at the bottom & carry all our luggage 1.5km up the mountain. I wish we'd left it on the mainland & used taxis because we had terrible trouble booking the ferry & ended up waiting 5 hours in Moyogalpa to get off the island.
