My girlfriend discovered Totoco Eco-Lodge on the internet, and it was far beyond our expectations. Perched on the side of one of Ometepe's volcanos, this property offered stunning views of the sunset, Volcan Concepcion, and the surrounding lake. We enjoyed excellent views from the swimming pool, the restaurant/bar area, and our charming villa.

Many hotels describe themselves as "eco lodges", however, Totoco truly defines the comprehensive eco-lodge experience. One of the main factors drawing us to Nicaragua was its natural beauty. Totoco Eco-Lodge offered us the opportunity to experience it comfortably and luxuriously without negatively impacting the very environment we were there to appreciate. The entire philosophy of the lodge is one which fully comprehends the symbiotic relationship between the natural environment and the importance of protecting it.

Don't miss the eco-tour offered by the lodge--it is eye-opening. Martijn was a wealth of information, and a gracious host. Also, the lodge is well located for day hikes to the top of Volcan Madaras. After the incredible hike through three distinct ecosystems (with howler monkeys, lush foliage, and lots of slipping and sliding in mud), we enjoyed a hot shower and delightful soak in the free-form, infinity edge swimming pool.

Totoco was a highlight of our trip to Nicaragua, and we highly recommend it.

Room Tip: All rooms have excellent views.

We stumbled across this amazing lodge after stopping at 4 very sub-par hostels in Balgue. We had no idea what was in store at the end of the cobblestone path 1km up the side of Volcano Madaras. When we finally arrived we were pleasantly surprised with what we found. A beautiful reception area at the entry of the open air restaurant and bar. We were warmly welcomed by the resident chefs. A couple local women that could speak as much english as we could speak spanish. After an interesting exchange of hand gestures and broken spanish we agreed on a price and were shown to the amazing cabana that over looked Volcano Concepcion. The cabana was perfectly clean and a great spot to relax.

Totoco offers a set meal menu for breakfast and dinner that was perfectly prepared and served as soon as you walk into the dining area.

We arranged a hike up Volcano Madaras for the next morning. Reasonably priced for a guided tour and we were given a small bagged lunch to take with us. The first part of the hike through the lower part of the volcano and natural coffee plantations was amazing, but the degree of difficulty quickly increased. We are both fit people, but the 7-8 hour "hike" up Madaras took us 9 hours as it was extremely slippery because of the previous nights rain. Aside from the difficulty it was a great hike. Seeing both Howler and the very shy White Faced Monkey was definitely a high point of the tour. The lunch break at the lagoon at the top of Madaras was great as the clouds parted and we had a clear blue sky welcoming us as we descended down. Totoco prefers to employ local guides that they are familiar with and though we both encouraged local employment our guide was definitely lacking in the "tour guide" mentality as we found ourselves scrambling to keep up most times.

The next morning we woke late and each had an hour long massage to sooth our tender muscles from the previous days climb. Totoco arranged for a driver to take us back to the ferry at a reasonable price and our driver was early and very helpful with offering suggesting for food and transportation once we were back on the mainland.

All-in-all, Totoco was a hidden gem and we were more than excited to have stumbled across it. The only down side of the whole Totoco experience was coming on Tripadvisor to write a review and realizing there was a pool that we did not discover.

My husband, I and our two teenagers stayed here for two nights after visiting Granada, and before heading to San Juan del Sur. I was a little worried that it would be too much getting to the lodge and back, because we had only seven nights in Nicaragua, but I am really happy we made the trip. Ometepe was well worth the visit, and I give Totoco Ecolodge my highest recommendation. We have stayed at a number of other ecolodges, and I have been disappointed to find them dark and damp. I was so surprised and impressed by how light and airy the rooms were at Totoco. What is most impressive, however, is how much personal care and effort has gone into making this place work. I have never been at a place where the owners showed such attention and concern. Our son apparently came down with a virus, and became very ill on our way to the lodge. We arrived very late, and Martijn brought our food to the lodge and did everything he could to make our stay comfortable. The food was delicious, and the view from the lodge is stunning. Because of our son’s illness, we did not get to do all the activities we had planned, but I was happy to just enjoy relax and appreciate the tranquility of the lodge. (The bellowing of the howler monkeys at night is worth the trip alone.)

My wife and I recently returned from a delayed honeymoon where we had the pleasure to visit and stay at Totoco Eco Lodge. The tranquility and views from Totoco can't be beat and there is no place on the island that offers this type of once in a lifetime experience. They have done a fantastic job of incorporating local and native resources including all of the materials to make the lodge, the local cooks, food straight from the on-site garden, and staff. This off-the-grid lodge (solar energy, unique and hygenic plumbing) will offer any traveler willing to brave a little of the simplicity of the lodge a location to really visit and explore the island. We would definitely recommend this lodge to anyone and we had a blast on our honeymoon. Take advantage of the tours offered at the lodge by locals. Lastly you will not be disappointed with the 3 course meal and views at dinner.

Room Tip: All four cabanas are excellent with their own flair.
