Nice and cozy hotel in the beautiful Cretan mountains. This is the perfect place to get away from the coastal mass tourism and heat and a good place to start hiking from. The rooms are simple but comfortable with extra blankets for the chilly mountain nights and each have their own balcony, overlooking the surrounding stunning landscape.
The hotel owner and staff are really friendly and welcoming. The owner knows the area really well and can advise you on what to see or which hike to take.
The food is traditional, made with local products and delicious. Try the mountain tea! The breakfast is filling and perfect when you have a day of hiking in front of you.
The Omalos Plateau and surrounding region are just magnificent, with a lot of rare plants blooming in the springtime. I highly recommend this place to nature lovers. There even is, planted in front of the hotel, a rare and endangered tree species that grows only in the Cretan mountains.

Room Tip: ask to have a room on the western/garden side (i.e. not the road side) of the hotel. You won't b...

This hotel is a perfect mountain getaway - very cozy and wonderfully decorated. The staff is very friendly and so accommodating. They helped us plan our stay and made it very easy to hike the Samaria Gorge. The restaurant is delicious and has a great, laid back, fun vibe. We loved our room and the view and recommend this place whole-heartedly.

We stayed here for one night on the way to Paleohora. The accommodation is a bit dated, but very comfortable. The owners' family are lovely people and the food in the hotel taverna is very good.
For the price ( we paid 35 euros) it is great, and a good base for touring this remote part of Crete, and for the Samaria Gorge of course.

Situated on a high mountain plain this hotel gives lovely respite from the heat of the coast – A perfect base for exploring the Lefki Ori. The hotel owner couldn’t have been more hospitable: They let us store our bags at the hotel (for nothing) while we stayed higher in the mountains and also drove us to various trail heads whilst we were staying at the hotel.
The hotel itself is a 70s time warp but its clean, comfortable and very friendly. The food was good and all locally sourced (try the local mountain tea) and all for 35 euro B & B a night – bargain !!!

My family stayed in the Neos Omalos for one night to get an early start hiking the Samaria Gorge in order to beat the crowds and the heat. The hotel provides a shuttle to the gorge entrance, located about 4 km down the road. We planned to get up around 6:30, have a quick breakfast then take their shuttle so that we could start hiking at 7am. The buses from Chania and elsewhere start arriving at 7:15, and the 15 min head start would be enough to keep us ahead of most others for quite a while. BAD PLAN.

When we arrived the day before and asked the hotel staff about getting an early shuttle they said that breakfast STARTS at 7am and the first shuttle departs after breakfast around 7:30. We explained nicely that we hoped to get started hiking earlier, but they refused to provide an earlier shuttle and said that only 3 tour buses arrive anyway before 8:30, so we'd still be able to beat the crowds.

The next morning, we arrived at 7am for breakfast along with a few other hotel guests. The hotel is by the main road and sure enough at 7:15, one bus after the next drove by us up the road. The hotel shuttle waited for a few stragglers so it didn't actually arrive at the gorge until 7:45. At that point hordes of people were disembarking from buses. The Gorge is spectacular, but it would have been so much more enjoyable if we weren't stuck in "trains" of other hikers most of the time. Moreover, the later start lost us 45 minutes of beautiful cool air for hiking.

The hotel staff were clearly totally indifferent to their guests and I would not stay there again, nor recommend it to anyone. The room was clean and the food was edible but my family and I feel it deserves only 1 star.

Omalos is a high plateau in the White Mountains. The hotel is situated in the tiny village on the edge of the plateau surrounded by fields full of wild tulips. It's a very strange area and out of season has a slow laid-back feel but probably heaving in the summer. It's a great place for walks even when Samaria Gorge is closed (try the ascent of Gingilos for amazing views). The hotel is rather like an alpine lodge with a wood panelled dining area, rooms are comfortable with balconies and staff are helpful. Out of season there are few people about apart from other walkers.

We booked ahead for a double room with breakfast (38 euros) and had a comfortable room with a small balcony at the back of the hotel. Only some of the rooms were opened up, so our request for a double bed rather than 2 singles could not be accommodated, but this is fairly standard in most places.
We ate well in the restaurant, warmed by the big log fire (this is not the Crete of sun-soaked beaches!), with a decent breakfast too, including eggs and fresh cheese from the shepherd across the road. The management were helpful with walking advice - they sell the Anavasi contoured maps but had sold out, so lent us their own copy for the day.
In mid April, the hotel was pretty quiet. One evening we were accompanied by a small group of jolly Japanese botanists, the second we were the only guests. But the Omalos plateau was at its best, covered with fields of wild pink tulips, and violet and scarlet anemones.
