...........and will return. A friend and I first stayed here in 2011 when we were walking east to west across Crete. I liked it that much that I said I would return with my wife. The rooms are simple, comfortable and clean with very good showers, and a sunny balcony on which to rest your weary feet after trudging down "the Gorge" to Agia Roumeli. Alternatively find your way down the steep cliff path from Agios Ioannis, after staying at the lovely rooms that Stelios's family have there ( this is not an advert, they are very good)
Stelios and Claire (and their beautiful daughter) are caring and genuine and they make a stay here an absolute pleasure. Ask Stelios for help with walking in the area, his experience is vast. Then ask Clair for advice on your blisters....
I need to spend more time in Agia Roumeli to take advantage of what this region has to offer, and I will be staying at the Pachnes when I return.
Footnote: We didn't eat at the Pachnes on this visit, we wandered down to the harbour. Roumeli is a very quiet place once the Samaria crowds have gone, and there are a number of places to eat in a very small village. We eat opposite the ferry quay, and it was very good. Sorry, I can't remember the name.More
