I'm sorry to say this was the hotel we enjoyed least in our tour of Northern Spain. It somehow missed on several levels.

Firstly the architecture and design - it is a little like how the Guggenheim fits into Bilbao. It is very modern & interesting but like the Guggenheim the shell is possibly more interesting than the contents.

On reflection I am not a fan of concrete walls, floors and ceilings on the interior of buildings and this I should have realised earlier. As a consequence the rooms are a bit minimalist and uncomfortable. The beds however are very comfortable. The functioning of the lighting system was a complete mystery. The door locks sometimes worked.

Reception staff were "cold". No smile. no welcomes, no assistance albeit they spoke good English. The barman was totally unhelpful when we tried to order snacks for our room. Actually he was rather rude and tried to divert us to the then unopened restaurant.

The roof top relaxation area is nice - but it overlooks the municipal swimming pools that looks very unused and full of green liquid.

The basement restaurant is good with tables spaced well apart from each other but we only ate breakfast there as the only option for dinner was an expensive tasting menu. At breakfast the service also did not impress. Clearly the kitchen and staff were under pressure resulting in an overlong wait for drinks and hot food.

We were told there were no restaurants or bars in the village but we found a very useful "corner shop" that sold most things.

So, this is a different kind of place to stay and for us an expensive mistake: we would have much preferred a more traditional kind of hotel with a friendly welcome & comfortable rooms.

We were upgraded so this review reflects a "superior" room.
The hotel was a trifle difficult to find as it was badly signposted. However, once found, it was wonderful. The room was huge. The bed was large and the open plan room with shower and toilet was spotless and comfortable. The roof garden offered 360 degree viewing over the town. On the same level was an enclosed gym area. On booking into the hotel we were given a token for a free drink in the hotels bodega. We had a Rioja and, as they intended, purchased a couple of bottles at a reasonable price. We did not eat at the hotel as the food appeared expensive.

Room Tip: We had room 318 and it was exceptional

This is a lovely hotel with a minimalist design, as mentioned earlier. The room I had this year had a very musty odor and when I couldn't find any signs of humidity staining, I mentioned to a maid that the management might want to check it out and she said several of the rooms do have that odor. I attributed it to all the concrete flooring and walls. There were problems with the door locks but that finally got sorted (Light turned green but door still wouldn't open). View was of the parking lot, so I would suggest not reserving room # 209. The lighting system is complicated and there was only one drawer so not much place to store clothes if you intend to stay for more than a day or two, but the hangers are "real", the bed comfy and the shower good, albeit the over-sink lighting wasn't very good for men to shave by. Those quibbles aside, the hotel is unusual in design, staff attentive and pleasant and the breakfast buffet sufficient and tasty. I would recommend the hotel but not room #209. Oh, one nice extra detail - a printed weather prediction was delivered each night along with the turn-down service.

Room Tip: Choose one overlooking the village rather than the parking lot.

Recommend Hotel Viura so highly - rooms are unique, very clean, fun - staff is a joy -- so helpful and dedicated - this hotel made our trip to Rioja fabulous. Would definitely look forward to a return trip. Also very affordable! And a wonderful buffet and cooked-to-order breakfast was included in our room rate.

Tucked away amongst some old town homes and buildings, this surprise emerges and its interior matches all un-expectations! The menu matches the modern interior and what a menu. Clean and quiet rooms with super comfortable beds and the most amazing shower! The hotel is nearby towns of Logrono and Lagaurdia. Hotel staff are helpful and polite.
