“Wonderful local place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2012

Quaint place where you will probably run in to a friend. They serve a varied menu that changes often. The unique food prepared with care. Not the same old stuff as in other restaurants.

“Charming, neighborhood eatery, near an Interstate, worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2011

In a very small town, in northern Massachusetts, near Interstate 91 and Vermont, a rustic, small-town eatery with very fine food (and wine). Rapidly becoming well-known, the Gil Tavern has a changing, local-fare menu, with decent mix of "American" items. Specials worth consideration. Very nice staff, with a small, open kitchen and two small rooms of tables. A great place for dinner on a cold night!

“Convivial atmosphere, choice ingredients, honest cooking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2011

Love the atmosphere: casual, convivial and somewhat sophisticated clientele. Food: great sourcing of local food produced in the area, fresh and choice. The cooking is "honest" and healthy and definitely good, nothing fancy as the taste is in the ingredients. Portions are generous. There is design in the menu, nothing dull. Situated on the main road in tiny Gill. Never tire of going because the it never disappoints. Tip: to parents of boarding school students in the area, bring your child here, they will love the good food!

“I love this place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2011

Solo or with friends, I've been a regular diner at the Gill Tavern almost every weekend since the place opened. It remains one of my very favorites and, so far as I'm concerned, represents a great value. I make no claim to being a gourmet. At the same time, after seven decades of living in New England and traveling fairly widely in this country and abroad, I've had a chance to experience many different types and qualities of eating establishments. At the Tavern, whether enjoying some Gorgonzola garlic bread, a bowl of beef stew, a really excellent salad or some other tasty treat, I always feel that I am getting just what I was promised: a fine meal featuring local produce and ingredients, cooked and served by friendly folks who know what they're doing and care about their customers. A previous reviewer, who apparently couldn't find time to pen an appreciation of the Gill Tavern when he/she was enjoying its food and ambience, more recently suggested that folks "walk away" from what the reviewer considered to be a diminished experience. My experience has been very different. I applaud the Tavern and its staff for offering a consistently excellent dining experience at a reasonable price in a wonderfully relaxing rural setting. So - walk away if you like. But don't be surprised if you find a hairy, tattooed academic (yours truly) waiting to take your seat!

“Do yourself a favor , and walk away...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2011

Sadly, I must say that The GIll Taven is a sub par restaurant. Since its opening, we have frequented it at time weekly to bi-monthly. Within it's last two years it has unfortunately gone down hill. The staff is pleasant, the ambiance is great, but the food and/or service is never consistant. We have dined on the same dishes, some servings being half the size of what we have had before, be it the fish, the steak or the burger... you never know what you are going to get, and they are not there to make sure that you are happy, the attitude is that you should be lucky to be eating there. Recently we were the only couple at the bar, and it took the manager/bar tender 10 minutes to offer my husband a beer and all the while she was 4 feet away from us chatting with another staff person! We have curtailed how much we dine there over the past two years to maybe once every few months, and every time we say "we are not going back theer again." The sad thing is that we are not complainers, we typically tip 20% and NEVER send anything back. But when you order Haddock and it is 1/3 of the size it was when you ordered it two weeks prior, or you order a hamburger well and it comes quite rare, or your pizza comes out completely burnt on the bottom with now apology, no offer of replacement and your bill is $60 - don't make the same mistake we did over and over again... go somewhere else, sadly

My advice , drive 10 minutes down the road in any directiona, andfor the same price, if not less, you will most definately get a better meal for your money, The Night Kitchen in Montegue, THe Monky ZBar in Amherst or the new restaurant at the Kringle Candle Store.
