“a true accidental find”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Having not booked any accommodation, we chanced upon the hotel simply by following a sign. We were the only guests staying at the hotel but the restaurant was full in the evening - obviously popular with the locals.
The room seemed freshly decorated and in very good taste, with the usual caveat about self-contained shower units and their capacity to drown by surprise.
Our meal was excellent - terrine to start, duck magret for me and entrecote for my wife. A gigantic fraise melba for my wife and a beautifully sharp plum tart for me.
Breakfast was the best 'continental' style start to the day that we have ever had - loads of fresh fruit, very fresh bread and croissants, excellent coffee and chocolate.
The room for two including breakfasts was 93 euros and dinner was 36 euros each plus wine.
There is also an off-road locked garage for cars at 6 euros a night.
Splendid!

Room Tip: the owner recommended a rear room for less traffic noise - it was August and hardly a car went past...

We ate at this restaurant on recommendation of our gite, and it was acceptable but not great. My wife and I had the three course menu, starters of poached eggs in cheese sauce and terrine du maison were great. Faux fillet was grisselly and not great. Kids had some salmon, which was cooked perfectly. Everything seemed to take ages though, to order, to get the wine, etc. our kids were going nuts by the end. All in all, a bit expensive for somewhat forgettable food. The only plus was finding a great champagne, which we hunted down the next day and bought loads!

We stayed at this hotel 4-5 years ago, and had a very good memory from both accomodation and dinner. I had an evening to spare and chose my dinner at the restaurant. As a single guest I was placed in the middle of the room. Why can not restaurants understand that single guests do not need to be placed on exhibition? The quality of the food was fair, - but I would bet that my wife and myself could do a better job. Worse though was the service, which gave the impression that the waiter took their guests for granted. No smile, - no expression of well-being and sign that the waiter enjoyed what she was doing.

The location of this old hotel is unique, and should draw far more people than is the case. For me this was the last time.

While the ambience and setting of this hotel was as recommended, we ended up with a little more than we bargained for.

Having travelled on a new build house boat for a week leading up to our stay, we thought we would treat ourselves before heading back to the UK. (My other half had enjoyed a meal here whilst doing his Inland Waterways qualification some years back...)

We picked up some Champagne and checked in. Meal was great, breakfast was great. Resulting itchiness and the downright embarrassing welts which resulted from our stay were not.

Both of us ended up covered in itchy and unsightly bites. A trip to the doctor confirmed they were caused by bed bugs. During our trip, there was no other establishment which we could have contracted them from. My partner was worst affected. He ended up with more than 200 bites all over his body including his face. I had over 100 and have photographic evidence to prove it.

On contacting the hotel, they refused to accept our claims and said no-one else had complained of such a thing, and they were going to fumigate the room. There was no suggestion of compensation or offers of a refund and they even had the audacity to say we would be welcome to stay again. (!)

It left a very sour taste in what was meant to be a luxury night following a trip down the French canals. I would never use or recommend this hotel again. We gave them ample opportunity to address our complaints, unfortunately the outcome was far less than satisfactory.

They may have fumigated the rooms, but be warned... they are unlikely to accept any complaints in future, and you are the ones who will be left feeling like you are in the wrong.

We have enjoyed many trips to France, with great hospitality in a number of establishments. This establishment is one which we will never be visiting again.

We had a very poor experience in this hotel/restaurant.
1) The menu is overpriced for the quality of the food (48 – 58 Euro for 4-5 courses), but a nice “amuse bouche” and very good “café gourmand”
2) Only one brand of champagne was served by the glass in the heart of the Champagne region
3) The restaurant is understaffed, also for French standards the serving time was very long
4) Next to some fresh mini-pastry, the leftover bread from the previous night’s dinner was served again for breakfast. No cheese or meat served for breakfast. At least there were some fresh fruit
5) The room was ok for the price (97 Euro for the room), but they gave us the most expensive room for 3 people even though we only asked for a double.
6) When we arrived we were asked if we wanted to park our car in the garage to protect it from theft and damage. When we left we were charged an extra fee of EUR 6 for the garage. Not a big deal. But when we mentioned that we would have appreciated that they told us the night before about the charge, the owner returned the money but literally screamed at us. A surprising reaction given that we were guests who spent over 250 Euro for dinner and board at the country side.
7) We will clearly not return to this place, neither for dinner nor for a night.

We found this small hotel by accident about lO yrs. ago and now stay every time we stock up with champagne. It is family run, some bedrooms not very large and one or two can be noisy occasionally. However, the breakfast cannot be faulted - cereals, bowls of cherries, strawberries, melon, kiwi fruit and raspberries together with yoghurt, croissant, rolls aplenty and boiled eggs if so wished. The set menu for dinner is 34.50 euros, large and well presented but if too much eat a la carte. Undercover parking available - it's a great place for a break.
