“Well worth the 19km of rough road”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2012

This is a classy lodge with excellent accommodation in log cabins with balconies; well maintained gardens and lovely pool. The bar and dining areas are top rate and the food was excellent, staff very friendly and on hand at all times. A very relaxing stay with a wide option of interesting walks available to suit all abilities.
At the time of our visit there was no signpost to Mbotyi River Lodge from the Lusikisiki road. Make sure you have good directions if it's your first visit.
We loved it and well worth the miles of rough road to reach the lodge.

The location is fantastic, I worked in this area for 5 years until 2010, but still visit on odd occassions to rekindle relationships with the people of Mpondoland. The food is great, the last remaining indigenous forest is here, the energy you feel emanating from the forest is clearly superior, if you have a clear path. The staff do their best to please you, unlesss you are really in a bad mood, you cant fault much! The only thing is a lot of people dont like wooden chalets but they do have other rooms, if this is not your thing. The bar experience is amazing, but this is really a place to be lazy and not in a hurry, kids can arrange for horse riding and the energetic can walk to the nearby waterfall, so if you dont want to veg out, there are little paddling boats at the base of the hotel, so you can do that as well! I like this place a lot!!!

The lodge is well hidden in the Transkei and right next to a small village. The location is really beautiful and we liked it a lot. The rooms are clean. There is a lot to do in the area and the beach as well as the river are great for swimming.
Unfortunately the food was not so amazing. Of course we stayed off season but a bit more than 2 dishes to choose would be nicer

I stayed at Mbotyi over the New Year period and wasn't overly impressed. The location is great and I do understand that the owners and staff have no control over the celebrations that take place around the lodge over the New Year. The food was not great and the accommodation basic. Our room was cramped with a tiny bath and a bucket for rinsing hair etc. The hotel is touted as a family resort, however my children were chased out of the games room by one of the senior staff - there were no adults in or near the games room at the time, and as requested by the sign on display, they were playing pool quiety and were under adult supervision at the time (I was sitting about 5m away from where they were playing). The.re is a childrens games room, however this is more suited to very young children. However, with exception of the grumpy lady who chased my children out of the games room, the staff were very freindly and helpful.

Room Tip: The log cabins seemed newer and more spacious

Our stay at Mbotyi far exceeded our expectations. The lodge is well appointed, despite its remoteness. There were plenty activities, and in addition we were treated to some unique, Wild coast adventures with Phil and his trusty dog, Milo. The food was delicious and plentiful, and our dietary concerns were very well taken care of. In general, the lodge is very unique, and is clearly run with the passion that the environment instils.

We took a guided 4 hour walk through the village and along the beach. For me, this was the highlight of our stay. It was not only beautiful, but our guide, a local native, really made us feel welcome in a completely foreign environment. If you enjoy learning about local culture, I'd really recommend a guided walk or hike offered through the Mbotyi River Lodge. On another note, the food was delicious and beautifully presented. This place is an unspoiled paradise and well worth the 45 minute drive along a mostly dirt road.

After a very disappointing stay at another hotel in Port St Johns, we came to hear about Mboyti River Lodge through a few of the locals there.

I had no idea at the time that my boyfriend had planned to propose but due to the disappointment at the other hotel he decided to wait for a more “romantic setting”. We arrived at Mboyti after a last minute booking and we were overwhelmed by the beautiful, unspoilt location of the Lodge paired with its magnificent gardens, comfortable rooms and superb, friendly service. The food was remarkable with every meal being a “taste adventure” and made with love and care.

The effort and detail that the staff put into creating an unforgettable experience is wonderful. My boyfriend had booked me for an 1 hour massage with a lovely lady named Balooloo who set the room up with candles, a glass of my favourite wine and flowers scattered all over - it was the epitome of relaxation. With the help of the friendly staff my boyfriend proposed to me in the most awe-inspiring and breathtaking way. Both locals and staff helped him set up on the beach after sunset and written in the sand with light candles was “Will You Marry Me”.
Thanks to the staff of Mboyti my engagement will be something I will remember forever.

A very special thank you to Gugu and Balooloo – your enthusiasm and the special care in which you treated this occasion was what made it even more special. A big thank also goes to Cain, our guide on the horseride to Waterfall Bluff – your knowledge of Transkei and your land is extraordinary – thank you for sharing with us the most beautiful place in the world.

Room Tip: Any of the sea-facing rooms (we were in 206)
