“First stop New Zealand”
Reviewed June 24, 2007

My wife and i made the long hual from scotland to new zealand . Our first stop the scenic coromandel coast. We arrived tired and dry. So pleased to be met with cold beer, chilled wine and snacks. We sat unwinding for about an hour with the owners taking in the views of the oceans and the islands beyond.
We got nice home made muffins in the morning and some more when we left on the next stage of our trip.
We stayed in the usual 5* hotels in nz, aus and on hamilton island but this was a great start homely , superb rooms and friendly

What an amazing vacation! My partner, myself and my parents (4 of us in all) carefully researched our options before deciding on where to stay during our highly anticipated trip to New Zealand. Luckliy for us, we chose the Waihi Beach Lodge for our stay in Waihi Beach on the North Island. Everything was perfect! The rooms were beautiful, Ali and Greg were the 'hosts with the most", and location (across from the beach) couldn't have been more perfect! From the moment we arrived the lodge owners (Ali and Greg) did an excellent job of making us feel at home at their lodge. They are extremely friendly and sociable people and can give great recommendations of restaurants and activities in the area. Actually, we ended up sitting down with them and they helped us re-direct our remaining travel plans on the North Island. This was a great advantage to us! Following their advice we ened up seeing some spectacular sites that we would have never even know about without their help (thanks Ali and Greg!) Also, their breakfasts are a MUST! - They provide a full breakfast that was our favorite on the entire New Zealand trip. Be sure to request Ali's muffins! She gave us the recipe so we make them at home now. Yummy! Thanks again Ali and Greg. We will definitely return someday - Next time we come to New Zealand, we plan to make it a much longer trip.
Take Care! Kevin, Michael and Kevin's mom and dad (Sandy and Dennis)

Waihi Beach Lodge is the place to stay if you want to meet the Kiwi hospitality. The owner Greg and Ali did our stay the most memorable, nice and friendly and with great view from their balcony. The rooms are in top shape (one of the best of our 3 week stay in NZ). They are service minded up to 100 %!

It's very close to the beach and you can borrow Greg's board if you want to and dare to meet the waves. And there is cool restaurant 10 minutes walk from the lodge. The review that says it's a long walk to (the wonderful) beach is of course matter of aspect, we thought it was nice (not dirty) and 3 minutes walk is not that hard, is it?

Per Waihi Beach Lodge, Waihi Beach, New Zealand e-mails and website, all inferences “Beach Suite”, “decks to watch the sea from”, “beach is a very short stroll from the door”, even the name Waihi Beach Lodge would lead one to believe that Waihi Beach Lodge is on the beach.

In actuality you have to cross busy State Highway 2, walk several hundred yards down a dirt road, then over a huge sand dune, then another hundred yards to get to the water. In fact the surf was not even visible from the lodge where we were standing talking with the owners.

When we voiced our disappointment we were told to leave and then they charged us two nights lodging, anyway.

So, we would recommend staying elsewhere.
