“Best ceviche mixto ever”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

Made the trek from Tamarindo.

Small bar/restaurant in Playa Negra.

Checked out the menu. Interesting Peruana/fusion mix.

Chose the ceviche mixture. Ten dollars in cost. Imperial was 1200 colones. It was served with an iced cold mug. Perfect.

The ceviche was a mix of calamari, shrimp, and swordfish. Excellent Peruvian style taste. No choclo or camote but accompanied by lightly seasoned fried yuca. The yuca was just right with the ceviche.

My only reason not to give 5 stars was the bill. I made sure to read the menu, twice even and just before I got the bill. The bartender added on a 10% charge for service I am guessing which was not noted anywhere on the menu. I had planned on giving her more of a tip than she decided to take for herself. It was not worth an arguement. Just very disappointing.

I would ge back to eat here in spite of the shortcomings of the bartender. The ceviche was excellent and there are a number of other items on the menu that still need to be checked out.

You are right ! It is not written on the menu. That is my fault; I did the menus and wrote it in spanish but on the english version, for some reason I left it out .
Thank you for letting us know. I will reprint the english asap.

“Some of the best food in all of Costa Rica”
Reviewed June 28, 2012

What is not to like?! Carlos and Andrea are amazing hosts! The food is Peruvian style, and quite frankly, much better than any I have eaten in Peru. If you miss out on this restaurant during you stay in the Tamarindo area you missed out on one of the best meals of your life.

“Couldn't ask for anything more, No reason to!”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

I had researched our "family" vacation for well over a month. We went to Cancun last year and did the whole "resort" vacation, but this year we wanted something "different."
My husband and I live and work in Afghanistan and our daughter's spring break vacation was soon to begin so planning had to be done.
After reading MANY reviews on Trip Advisor for the places we wanted to go, the reviews for Cafe Playa Negra stood out the most. Although we found "fancier" hotels, less drive time from the airport to the hotel, better "deals" on Expedia, something just had me going back and reading the reviews of Cafe Playa Negra at least two or three times a week.
From the time we booked our flight/hotel with Expedia, Carlos, the owner of Cafe Playa Negra, was in constant communication with us. He even set up a airport pickup for us with Lula's Tours who is mentioned on their website. Lula as well, kept in constant contact with us.
When we landed, Lula was waiting for us with a sign stating our name on it. She began to drive and we all talked the whole way to the Cafe. The drive was about 1hour from the airport, but with the ever going conversation, it seemed like minutes. Just with our encounter with Lula, we knew we had made right decision for our family vacation.
Upon arrival, a little after 915pm, we were greeted by Sandra and Cala. They head the restaurant which closes at 9pm, but they still offered us something to drink and dessert, since the kitchen staff was gone already. We accepted and talked with them for a few minutes before heading to our room.
The rest of the time there was unbelievable! The local people were great. Other restaurants around the area had great food as well, but our home away from home while on vacation was Cafe Playa Negra.
We did many things while in Playa Negra, which Lula set up for us. She was a GEM. The walk to the beach was just like other reviews said, 7 min, unless you stop and look at nature, which we did.
When it came to leave Playa Negra, it was hard on our hearts. We, even our daughter who doesn't speak Spanish, didn't want to leave our "new family" in Playa Negra, Our new family was the staff from Cafe Playa Negra and their children. They accecpted us so quickly with their big warm hearts.
While on our 9day stay at Cafe Playa Negra, we can to the conclusion, we are no longer a "resort" type family. We would rather go on vacation and get "away" from the "fast, busy" life and really relax and enjoy nature and our time with each other. Not be hassled or pressured into buying timeshares, souvenirs, drinks, food, etc. ......We completely understand everyone has to make a living, we just now know there is a place where people make a living and allow you to really enjoy your time away from where ever you came from.
Many thanks to ALL the staff at Cafe Playa Negra!
We will definitely be visiting again!!
