“Great Day Safari and Elephand Interaction”

The elephand interaction at Bayete Zulu Game Reserve is a place you can interact with three elephants that were saved from being killed. Their elephant handlers introduced us to "Rambo, Rachel and Jabulari" their habituated elephants. It's not expensive if you book directly. Telephone +27(074) 100 5221 or email "reservations@bayetezulu.co.za" -- afterwards if you are lucky you might be able to pay for a 1/2 day safari -- the big five are here and the guide was very informative. Directions if you dirve: take the N2 North from Umhlanga/Mt.Edgecombe off ramp. Turn left at Boabab Petrol Station and travel 9KM, where you will se their gate.

“A must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2014

I had always heard that African Elephants were much wilder than their Asian cousins and not tameable or approachable. The handlers at Bayete Zulu Elephant Interaction dispelled that rumor. These elephants were raised by humans and were not able to join the herd (yet) so they hang out with humans all day. Each day at 11:00 they come to the enclosure to get their treats (horse pellets, yum!) and allow humans to get up close, touching them and feeding them and deigning to pose for goofy pictures. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it for all travelers to the Hluhluwe area. (credit to Matthew S. Wixted for the photo)

The Bayete Zulu Private Game Reserve have an elephant interaction. They have wild three elephants Rambo, Rachel and Jabulani - father, mother and baby - which are part of their herd and are there because they want to be. Their motivation is probably that they get food and attention. First of all we were given the background information about these particular elephants and a very interesting talk about elephant behaviour. We were then allowed to feed and touch Rambo, the large male, who was quite happy for us to look into his mouth, touch him and feed him and get close to him. We then moved on and fed Rachel and Jabulani. The whole thing lasted about an hour and the elephants wandered off to rejoin their herd. It was an amazing and quite emotional experience to be so close to a wild elephant. I would highly recommend this for all age groups and it is particularly educational for children. It IS expensive - R350 per adult and R200 per child, but it was the highlight of our holiday in Zululand.
