“Penguins, penguins and more penguins...”

Better value than Simon's Town - you can get closer to more penguins (and dassies too). And cause there's less people, its a bit more down to earth

“Perfect Stop Over on way back from Gansbaai”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2014

We stopped over in Betty's Bay on our return drive from Great White Shark Diving (see other review) in Gansbaai, and its well worth the little detour.

For a tiny fee, i think 10 or 15 ZAR, you get to enter the Penguin Colony, and there are hundreds. Be aware they close already at 5PM. But once inside, you can take long walks along the very new and nicely made boardwalks, and observe the penguins up close in their natural environment. There are not many tourists here, and we highly recommend this one, over Boulder's Beach!

Do you like penguins? Do you think they are cute little creatures? Would you like to see them up close in a not so crowded place?

I have good news for you then this is the places for you. On the way along the coast from Hermanus to Cape Town (or the other way around) these little birds have found themselves a nice little place to make a colony. It can be easily overlooked on your drive through Bettys Bay, only two signs mark the way so if you are through Bettys Bay you missed it.

There is a parking place and a toilet and once you´ve paid the minimal fee, you can enter the boardwalk and wander through the colony. There are hundreds of them and depending on the season there is a lot of traffic directly next to the boardwalk for picture opportunites galore. You can see them resting, flirting, moulding, feeding, breeding all very close up.

As a plus, there is also a large Cormoran colony,. dassies play around and some colouful geckos roam the rocks.

So if you like penguins and drive the N2 take a turn toward the south at Gordons Bay enjoy the magnificent coastal route (even beats Champman´s) and then have a clouse encounter with those little buddies.

“Interesting to see”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2014

A quick visit is a must to view this rare penguin colony in Betty's Bay. You don't need to go for hours. A quick 20 minutes is all you need. Luckily there are lots of wine farms and some beer breweries to fill the rest of your day.

“Penguins Galore”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014

This is a better place to see Penguins than Boulder bay and well worth a detour if anywhere nearby in your travels along the Garden Route. In fact it is worth making a detour as we did.

This is not easy to find and the signs for the Penguins are the only sign to encourage you as you travel of the main road down side roads until you reach a car park by the curved beach at Stoney Point.

If you need a toilet you will find a small toilet block just past where you park your cars.

You can then enter the wooden boardwalk after paying a small fee.

Then you can wander along with Penguins everywhere.

You can see them close by nesting and mating depending on the season. You will also see them at play in the boulder stricken waterline with the sea making spectacular crashes over the sea boulders and rocks.

These Penguins are not at all phased by humans and seem to be very curious and want to come close up to look at you. I guess there could have been thousands of them as they clearly have made this their home.

I have not added photos as I am sure everybody knows what they look like but I took over a hundred snaps and some video and did feel at times that some of the Penguins were posing for me and making a special parade to show themselves off. This really has to be seen to be believed.

This is an ideal place for both adults and children as it is very easy to walk along the well laid out wooden boardwalk.

I would recommend a warm or windproof jacket as the wind can be biting. Well that was the case when we were their.
