I love South African penguins... plain & simple! On our way back from Kleinbaai & Hermanus, we wanted to see the penguins... we searched forever to find them as it's not clearly marked on the road. By the time we got there, the entry portion had closed, so we just saw a few waddling around. I'm sure it would have been great had we been able to get in. From afar, it seemed there were a LOT of penguins at this colony so it is worth a visit, but I prefer the intimate interaction with the penguins & dassies at Boulder's.

On a trip back from Hermanus we travelled through Betty's Bay and came across Stony Point Penquin Colony. It is not very well marked from the main road or once you have turned, but head toward the beach and you will find it.

Plenty of parking and only a small entry fee also made it a value visit!

The jetty like walkway through the colony gives close encounters and great photo opportunities.

Absolutely beautiful and well supported.
The best one I have been too!

If you can only go to one beach to see the penguins, this is the one. It is cheaper, has less people and greater access to the penguins. Amazing.

It is easy to forget that the African Penguin (previously called the Jackass Penguin owing to its call) is endangered when viewing penguins in such numbers. We visited here on the advice of friends who had been to Boulders Beach and reckoned Betty's Bay to be better. Plenty of other marine bird life there as well.

We came here first and Boulder's Beach the next day. The two are quite different but would definitely make this the #1 choice. It took a bit of an effort to find the spot - there was a sign on the R44 for penguins but the next turn only had sign for Long Point; from R44, left on Porter, left on Crassula to stop sign near end, right on Waller and park (signs are visible here; R10 admission fee). The board walk here is longer, penguins are everywhere and although we visited during off season, I imagine this spot will be less crowded always. The drive between Betty's Bay and Gordon's Bay is every bit as impressive as Chapman Peak Drive.
