We were on a trip from Christchurch to Mt Cook, Dunedin, Waikawa, Queenstown, Milford Sound, and ending up trekking the Routeburn Track. So glad we discovered Waikava Harbour View with its great facilities, wonderful views, lots of wildlife and a lovely area to relax in, but if you wanted exercise, great walks in the Catlins. We visited the spectacular McLean Falls, Slope Point (the most southerly point on the South Island) and Curio Bay with its yellow-eyed penguins and ancient fossil forest. A truly magical experience!

We were 4 couples, staying for 4 nights, so despite the main lodge having 4 bedrooms, we decided to be decadent and spread out, so we also rented the two cabins Toi Tois and Harakeke. So we had the entire place to ourselves with 2 couples in the lodge and theother two in cabins. That worked out very reasonably at a little over $100/night per couple. The rooms, lounge ad kitchen were all very adequate, with good amenities for cooking up a storm! (Tip: make sure you bring groceries and alcohol as there is nowhere to shop locally, apart from a little 4 square at Tokanui - 30 kms away (where there is also a pub & Bottle shop).
We had one balmy night sitting on the deck for "sun downers", and taking in the great views, but then the weather closed in, but the lounge room overlooks the same view, so sun downers weren't interrupted. Dined out at Niagara a couple of meals and were very happy - they do good coffee. Loved the little museum around the corner and did some beautiful local walks, (Curio Bay and Cathedral Cave were great) including a really nice one across the farmlands (with farmers permission) across on the opposite side of the Waikawa harbour.
All in all would thoroughly recommend Waikava.

We stayed in Tois Toi which perfect for a couple. There was lots of room and everything was beautifully clean, well maintained and comfortable. The view from the deck was amazing. Locally there is a really interesting museum and we had a great time watching the penguins at Curio Bay. We had coffee and dinner at the Niagara Falls Cafe which were excellent and it is only a few minutes drive away.
We would certainly stay here again and recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all and enjoy the tranquility of the Catlins.

A wonderful clean and well equipped place to stay. Every need was catered for. Lots of information on things to do and serviced by wonderful cafés close by. The Blue Cod Blues two minutes walk away gave us a wonderful blue cod and chips meal and was very friendly. A wonderful informative museum and we would certainly stay again.

Room Tip: If travelling in a group the lodge would be awesome. Sleeps up to ten

We had 8 of us and plenty of room. The location is beautiful and the house, spotless. Enjoyed take away from the little diner down the road. Be sure to bring groceries though-don't expect to shop for them in the area.
