Waikava Harbour View

The unit was very well appointed, clean and comfortable, with idyllic views of the harbour. Because we were there in winter there was a lot of condensation on the inside windows when it froze outside and was toasty warm inside. There also wasn’t much open in the area, but the Niagara Falls café just a few minutes down the road was supberb – The seafood chowder and smoked salmon salad were outstanding. I highly recommend a visit to the area and would stay at Waikawa Harbour View again.

Thanks Carolyn S for taking the time to share your experience of staying in one of our Waikava Harbour View cottages. Yes can be quite chilly in the Catlins in July and we are pleased you were nice and warm. Unfortunately there is some condensation due to cold outside and warm inside. We really appreciate your recommendation for others to visit the South Catlins area and hope you will stay with us again.
Kind regards
Judy & Tony

We (a family of four, two adults and two children) stayed for four nights in the main house, which was spacious and clean. It was lovely to have plenty of space and we used three of the four bedrooms. The beds were all super-comfortable. Nowhere to put things in the bedrooms was a bit odd though - the built in cupboards were full of spare bedding and ironing boards etc, and there wasn't even a chest of drawers or hooks on the wall/back of the door - strange given that the rooms are so big that they should be so empty.

The living room/diner/kitchen was also clean and spacious, and fairly well equipped and comfortable. The sofas are not the squidgiest in the world, but perfectly fine for curling up on to watch a movie from the thoughtfully provided DVD library. The lighting is quite dim, especially as there was a bulb not working in the kitchen. The free wifi was handy for checking emails and booking onward travel.

The bathrooms (one for three of the bedrooms, and one en-suite) were spotless and more than adequate, although the en-suite shower did leak a bit.

However, the piece de resistance was the view of the harbour from the deck (or inside from the living room if the sandflies were about) - a huge view of constantly changing water and mud as the tides ebbed and flowed. Not much boat action, but plenty of birds to keep us entertained. And Curio/Porpoise Bay just up the road is lovely, lovely, lovely.

The village itself is tiny, but the museum (where we collected and left the house keys) was a wonderful collection of local memorabilia and a testament to the strong community spirit. It is entirely run by volunteers which makes it all the more remarkable. Our stay coincided with the annual local arts festival, in the village hall across from the house, which was also great, a riot of colour and an excellent showcase of local talent. Must also mention the excellent fish and chips we had from the Blue Cod Blues van, parked next to the museum...

We would love to go back to Harbour View one day, it's a shame it's so far from home!

Only stayed one night which was a shame as the single bed unit was perfect for our needs. Everything you could want. All it lacks is the afternoon sun on the deck! ... but then you can sit in the garden and look over the harbour.
Beware the cold nights as with typical Kiwi single glazing it can soon chill and the windows mist up.
Loved the fish and chips van thats parks up next to the Museum.

Remote location with good facilities. However, the sofa bed was uncomfortable. The bedlinen for the third guest was insufficient (no quilt cover and what appeared to be unlaundered sheets which we found in the cupboard!!.) MAin bedroom lacked bedside lamps - A broken bedside lamp in cupboard and no lamp for the person using the sitting room as a bedroom. Heated towel rail was not conected to the electric which seamed a little pointless. All minor issues which hopefully will be resolved for future patrons as buliding and location were great.

Beautiful views off the deck! This unit (4 bedroom lodge) was very clean and moden. Small issue on check-in (key pickup location was closed for the day due to a funeral), but everyone was very helpful and we had the key within 30 minutes! Wish we had brought laptops with an ethernet connection (only had wifi devices), but there was certainly plenty to see and do without the connection to the outside world.

Absolutely beautiful! LOVED the heated mattress pad - best sleep EVER! perfect location - close to so many things to see and do! very clean and cozy. Niagara Falls restaurant down the road was fabulous as well! We will DEFINITELY here again (and we're pretty picky!). Our only regret was that we were only here for one night and we arrived late in the evening...would have loved more time! Our suggestion is to stay here for 2 nights at least...don't rush through!
