“basic but rich nature n scenery”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Come here if you want great views and get close to nature. didn;t use the toilet and showers though cos they looked quite horrible. Anyways, why didn't i complaint? The reason lies in the spectacular scenery from an elevated ground within the park and also a choice of 2 sides of the beach for views. From the cliff, the scenery is a panaromic 360 degrees of pure geological wonder and witness the might of waves in the area. The host was very nice and helpful as well. Office has a small store as well. Pretty unfortunate that the campervan sites weren't appointed with a view or else it would be almost perfect by virtue of scenery alone.

At $27 for 2 people in a campervan, we felt this was too much for the very, very basic facilities on offer. It was $2 for a shower on top of the site fee. Surely some money could be spent on improving the facilities?

The reason we stayed was the fantastic location and private site within the flax. Just 2 minutes to the beach to view the penguins and petrified forest.

Even though the weather was not great the location and experience was amazing, the park is basic but that adds to the setting, we did see penguins, the night the wind blew and blew, resulting in losing power, would of stayed another night but the weather was just awful.

Room Tip: Make sure you spend the to see the penguins

Good location for seeing penguins (there are only 8 pairs of penguins however, not the mad dash across the beach everyone was expecting!). Site is in a lovely setting, however it is totally basic.

The views from the office are great and we could see dolphins swimming amongst the board riders. The weather was bitter. The campsite was very basic and the toilets and showers were quite a hike from where we parked our camper but the quiet and privacy of our site was great. Seeing the mother penguins coming in at night to feed their young was just amazing tho I wish some tourists would read the penguin info as they were walking all over the place between mother and young....so annoying. I will write to the DOC to suggest more information needs to be put up if people enter the penguin site from near the bluff. The weather did not put us off tho beacuse we expected it to be bad.

Basic tent pitches and toilets, but well priced and well placed! Lots of information in the office, and you get to see penguins within a 1 minute walk!

If it wasnt' for the view and peace I would have moved on.
Staff on arrival were friendly, gave us good viewing times for local attractions and told us to pick a site (we were in a tent). Pitched in amongst the numerous flax sites. Grass very long (but trampled down from previous campers) and the areas in flax were on slopes. Made putting pegs in a challenge to get through the density of grass. VIEW WAS MAGICAL though. Camp shop/office had good selection of foodstuffs and camping supplies. Basic kitchen is LESS than basic. Hotplate with only 1 working plate, kettle, microwave and 2 large sinks. Minimal bench space. And with 4 people in there it was very crowded!! Box on wall for fire extinguisher, but no extinguisher available. This all enclosed in a concrete water tank. Small old fridge/freezer available in smaller concrete water tank. Sorry didn't check out laundry but washing machine and dryer available. Showers (4) enclosed in separate concrete water tank (very old). Showers cost $2 and last approx 5 mins, so be sure to TAKE EXTRA $2 COINS WITH YOU. This is not on website. Flush tolilets onsite along with portaloos (which were out of order). Covered picnic table area available if wet or windy. NO CELL PHONE COVERAGE FOR LONG DISTANCE. Office/shop open 9am - approx 8-30pm. No phone available onsite when shop closed. No information on shop window regarding nearest available telephone or emergency equipment (for fire) when shop closed. No numbered ticket given on arrival to identify your van/tent if you are away from the site if you are needed to be contacted.
IN FAIRNESS the owners are in process of upgrading the facility, but seems the basics have been overlooked.
IT WAS THE VIEW AND TRANQUILITY THAT MADE IT WORTHWHILE.
Great place if you are fully self contained, but wouldn't want to cook on gas amongst the flax and long grass.
