We went today at the very end of the season. We were warned: no whales, probably very few puffins. But we couldn't figure out a better way to see a bit more of Newfoundland and get out on the water with only one day and no car, so decided to go despite the cost and possible disappointment.

Well, we didn't see any whales and only saw a few puffins, but the scenery was so gorgeous, and the other birds plentiful, and the crew so friendly and helpful, we were so glad we went. If you're not going to get another opportunity to go out on a boat, take this one and make the most of it! If you're going earlier in the year you'll probably have much more luck with the whale-and-puffin spotting. If you don't, you're still guaranteed a really fun afternoon full of songs and lots of laughs.

We took this excursion to see whales and puffins. We were disappointed not to see whales but it was past the season. We saw huge numbers of puffins. The day was sunny and pleasant. Boat crew were friendly and inviting. In the end though, it was an expensive bird watching tour.

O'Brien's (thank you, Great Grandma Nellie for the family name) is as good as it gets in touring.
Shuttle can be arranged from your St John's hotel to Bay Bulls harbor.
Bay Bulls harbor must be little-changed from the days when the Irish convict boats arrived, courtesy of the English. It is a sparsely populated inlet with minimal housing (perhaps those houses blow away in the nor'easters). Back in history you go, just to depart from Bay Bulls harbor.
The O'Brien enterprise is undertaken by Nwefoundlanders steeped in the song and history of the area and they share both with tour-ers. Singing Irish songs as your boat sails by Gull Island, commenting on Puffin proclivities and Gull Island natural life , pointing out the bald eagle, making sure you don't tip overboard.
Obrien's is Just the greatest, energizing experience an ancestor can ask for!

I wanted to write you as soon as I arrived home to say what a wonderful boat tour you gave today. Such a friendly, professional group right from my earliest emails to our meet and greet to the exceptional crew and tour. Entertainment in both story telling and singing was outstanding. Some skillful driving there Captain Joe and the passion shown for this incredible land and sea was truly genuine.
