My wife and I just got back from Newfoundland and one of the highlights was Gatherall's. We felt very safe while out on the cruise on there boat. We saw lot's of whales and saw lots of Puffins and other birds. I would recommend to all that travel to Newfoundland that you go out with them. They made sure we all saw whales and they made sure we got close enough too see the puffins.

Hi folks!

Great to hear from you and wonderful to know you enjoyed your adventure with us at Gatherall's. Sounds like you were in luck with wildlife sightings. Since we are dealing with nature we never know what we will see from one day (or tour) to the next. We can never guarantee sightings, but do our best to get guests in all the right spots. We also always remind our guests that in an effort to avoid disappointment, it is better to research and come during peak sighting season of whatever you hope to see. Even then, we can never know. Whales are best viewed mid June through to mid August, puffins early May through to mid September and and icebergs in this area are typically seen during May and June.

We are happy to hear you felt safe on the Gaffer VI (our catamaran) and that you consider your tour with us to be one of the highlights of your trip to NL. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review and for the great endorsement. We really appreciate it.

Please visit us again if you find yourself in our neck of the woods (or ocean) once more.

Wishing you the best,
Kathryn

We had a great tour with the Gatheralis. The ship is well maintained, clean and stocked with refreshments. The crew was very helpful with information and people who needed assistance. They were entertaining and ensured we have a good time. The ship was big enough that we we not adversely affected by the swells.

Hello!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We really appreciate it. Our Captain and crew are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge of local wildlife with others so we are happy you found the tour to be informative.

With wildlife, it's impossible to guarantee sightings, but we advise guests to research the best times in the season so as they are more likely to avoid disappointment. It is quite late in the season now for whales as their peak feeding (and sighting) time is mid June through to mid August. Even then, we just never know as they have a big playground in the ocean. Puffins are best viewed early May through to mid September and icebergs in this area are typically seen April through to mid June.

We are happy that you felt your time spent on the water with us warranted 5 stars and we hope you join us again if you find yourself in our area once more.

Wishing you the very best and many more great adventures at sea,
Kathryn

This is a slick operation. The tour itself is very good, with lots of information about the bird life. We found the tour expensive and this opinion was confirmed when we noticed that many of souvenir items were priced 10% - 15% higher than any other souvenir shops in the St John’s area. The boat was comfortable, the staff personable.

Hi Folks.
Great to hear that you enjoyed the cruise and found the staff to be so personable & knowledgeable.
Our tour pricing it is comparable to all other professional tour operations both locally / within Newfoundland and on par with most quality tour services throughout the world. As for our souvenirs & crafts, most of our clients have the opposite experience and comment that the items are very reasonably priced with one of the best selections of locally created works (not knockoffs that are produced overseas) to be found in Newfoundland. Our staff take great effort to find unique items for the store - many of which are simply not offered in other stores.

Wishing you many more wonderful experiences.

There are many Puffin tours but we chose this one because of the reviews and we weren't disappointed. Bay Bulls is about an hour south of St. John's and the trip down did not offer much to see. The boat we chose was a larger one with maybe 50 people. Most people went to the upper deck which I couldn't get to because of mobility issues. I sat outside in the back of the boat on the steps and that was a great viewing spot. Witless Bay conservation area focuses on three islands. We saw the puffins of course and also Northern Gannet and Great black backed gull and common murres. I really think it unusual to see a whale in August here but maybe occasionally, not on our trip. The puffins are so cute and they mate for life, so you see them up close on their burrows guarding their eggs two by two or flying overhead to get food from the water. Besides the puffins the other birds also nested on the islands. There were millions of birds--no exaggeration. Once we saw the birds, the crew of the boat put on quite a musical show which was very enjoyable--they all had great voices. I couldn't see anything since it was done on the top deck but I could hear everything. There were snacks and bathrooms on the boat and bathrooms at the dock. A very professional operation. There was also a gift shop here.

Hello,

We are happy to hear we were the highlight of your visit to Newfoundland! Sounds like you enjoyed seeing the many birds. You are correct in saying there are millions, as the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is home to the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America. You are also correct to say that it is late for whale watching this time of year. We advise all of our guests that, depending on what they would like to see, it is best to research the times throughout the season when sightings are peak. Whales are best seen mid June through to mid August, puffins early May through to mid September and icebergs in this area are generally seen throughout the months of May and June.
We are also happy to know that you enjoyed the entertainment aboard the boat and that the sound system was sufficient so as you could hear it from all areas of the vessel. Both areas of the boat have wonderful vantage points for viewing wildlife, so although you could not make it to the top deck, we are happy you still had the complete tour experience.
We take pride in running a very professional operation and are thankful you noted that in your review. On behalf of the entire team at Gatherall's, thanks for taking the time to share your experience and thanks for choosing to set sail with us.
Wishing you the best.
Cheers,
Kathryn

We took this tour a little too late in the season to see whales, but the crew was lovely and entertaining, and the views and the experience of being out on the ocean so wonderful, that we didn't really mind. We saw tonnes of puffins, common murres, and even a bald eagle. Thanks to the captain and crew for a wonderful day out on the water!

Hello!

Great to hear from you. Happy to know you enjoyed seeing the many sea birds that call the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve home. If you ask us, there really isn't much that beats a day at sea!
We do advise our guests that there are peak seasons for sightings so depending on the main intent of your visit, it is best to investigate in hope of avoiding disappointment. Peak season for whales is mid June to mid August, puffin sightings are best from early May through to mid September and icebergs in our area are more typical in May and/or June. Since we are dealing with nature we can never guarantee sightings, but the stated times are typically best, but can of course, vary.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and we hope you come back and visit again as we'd love to see you aboard once more.
Wishing you the best,
Kathryn
