drove past bay bulls on our trip around the rock and decided that when we came back to st. john's we'd take the small trip down and try a whale watching excursion. had no idea which to choose but this was the first we found so we gave it a go. we saw plenty of birds including some bald eagles getting lunch and one take a swim in the ocean but unfortunately no whales which can't be faulted to gatherall's. the boat ride was good, the crew made it fun, and we had a good time.

Gatheralls Puffin and Whale Watch Tour was a great time for all the members of our family. Family meaning my 70+ Mother and Father inlaw to my wife and young son. The tour took place in July and there were many Humpbacks, Fin and Mickey whales to see. Even though the weather was rough meaning it was very windy the tour was still very interesting. The operators of the tour boat were pleasant, sincere and genuine. Being from NL sometimes we Newfoundlanders can be a little over the top, however all the operators were excellent. A tip to save a little money would be to book online, and use your CAA memebership. If your a senior then include that as well as the CAA membership. Double your savings.

My husband and I were in NL a couple of weeks ago and were a little reluctant to take a whale watching tour as we didn't want to go and see nothing. However, we decided to chance it and what a pleasant surprise!! We went out in the morning when the water was calm and were amazed at the number of whales and puffins and other birds we saw. It was quite a thrill to see the whales up close and personal. One of the whales seemed as though it was showing off and rolled over several times for us beside the boat. The boat 'captain' ensured that everyone got to see the whales by turning the boat around allowing a perfect view. What amazing creatures!! The puffins are really cute with what appears to be 'painted on' faces. They are much smaller than I imagined.

We were both very impressed by Gatherall's! Definitely should be on your 'must do' list.

We pulled up to Gatherall's without a reservation, but this was no problem and they booked us on their next boat out. We had some time to kill, so they kindly directed us to a nice walk that we might do along the coast while we waited. The tour itself was very well organized and narrated, with lots of good information and funny anecdotes. Once we spotted whales, they were able to get in very close and while we spent 30 minutes enjoying and admiring two gorgeous humpbacks who were apparently very interested in our boat, the guide continued to provide lots of interesting facts and information. After we'd had our fill of the whales, we headed over to the Witless Bay Ecological Preserve which was a real treat. The puffins were spectacular! They fly right over your head while you are standing on deck and they are everywhere -- on the island, in the water around the boat, in the air. They are gorgeous! We got loads of information on the islands, the preserve, and all of the birds who nest there. It really was a super day out and I highly recommend Gatherall's for your Bay Bulls whale watching experience.

We took a whale/puffin watch tour at the begiinning of August. We did see a couple of humpback whales frolicking close to the boat and we also saw many puffins which was a highlight for us. The cruise takes you by an island which is inhabited by many species of birds and you can enjoy watching them in their natural habitat. The crew is entertaining, singing some traditional Newfoundland songs, and also very educational with lots of information on both the whales and the birds we were viewing.
