Saw the castle from the Autostrada, got off the exit and followed the signs through narrow streets to the castle.
Beware, though, that it is not a well maintained, furnished castle but mere well-kept ruins. For adults, it might not offer enough except for a small glimpse of history.

But they have a game for kids where the child has to follow arrows and tips and learns quite a bit about the history through the eyes of a child from back in time. Awesome! Our five-year old had a blast! (At the end, the kid can earn a small price.)

In the high season, they have a little cafe, I think. The bathrooms were very clean!

The views from the castle are fantastic!

Definitely worth a two-hour stop - if you are interested in history or if you have children.

Castello d'Avio is overrated. The signs did not indicate where we should park and so we hike a good distance uphill to the castle. Part of the castle is in ruins. However the frescoes in the Guard House were unusual in that they are battle scenes. Quite amazing. But if you really want to see castles, there are better examples in the area.
