A very beautiful spot and the upkeep of the cemetery appears to be second to none. The graves look out over Souda bay in the bottom of the valley and walking amongst the graves, reading the names and pondering the men and women who lay in the graves without a name, is very moving and emotional.
If you want to spend a quiet hour considering what these men and women did for us in the wars, this is the place to go.

This is one of the most peaceful and tranquil settings of a cemetery I have ever been to. I am glad these brave heroes are able to rest in peace here.

“Walk among heroes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

This is not a tourist attraction as such, but an opportunity to walk among heroes. The history is far to long & involved to detail here, but a visit to this cemetery, along with that of the German War Cemetery at Maleme, is a humbling experience.

Suda Bay War Cemetery sits in the beautiful bay of Souda, and contains just over 1,500 graves, half of which are unknown soldiers. All the headstones face towards the bay, which is peaceful, tranquil, and very beautiful, but so sad. Many of the young men who died in the Battle for Crete were in their late teens or early twenties.

Be sure to couple a visit to Suda Bay with a visit to the German War Cemetery at Maleme, which is only a short distance away, and where the remains of over 4,500 soldiers lie - again, many of them unknown.Truly thought provoking.
