We stayed at Casa Alvarada in early December 2013. The B&B was very well situated in the small town of Comala. Hosts Mara and Jupiter were very accommodating. The rooms were clean, spacious and well kept. Breakfast was served daily and was very good. The B&B had a friendly family feel as we shared tales of travel, and family with the hosts. Jupiter is a wonderful guide. We took the Artisan tour and enjoyed it thoroughly. I suggest taking a tour as Jupiter is very knowledgable about the region and one can make the most of your stay through a guided tour. Comala is a very pleasant mexican town, a pleasant alternative to the much larger city of Colima, yet within an easy bus ride to the city. We were lucky to arrive on the day that the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe began. There were great festivities all week, so it was an exciting time to visit Comala. If you are thinking about visiting an authentic mexican town without a lot of tourists or confusion of a big city be sure to check out Comala.

Room Tip: all rooms are good

we stayed at Casa Alvarada for one month. I was most impressed by the professional manner of the administration, even before we had arrived. during our stay all concerns were met with prompt attention. Any questions about the city were answered effectively. The breakfast was lovely, a meal with touches of Mexico but not the standard huevos Mexicana.

Room Tip: The Rangel Villa is right on the street, the other two are back off the street a bit. We stayed in b...

We had a fabulous time in Comala and Casa Alvarada made that possible. It was clean, tidy, comfortable and had a great bed. Mara and Júpiter offer a wonderful place to stay and you can relax and kick back in the pretty garden or be adventurous and wander about town or the nearby sites with one of the tours that they offer. The breakfasts were good, every morning it would be different, all delicious. We had planned to stay two nights and ended up staying four because it was so relaxing to be there. My husband and I are looking forward to getting to go back to Comala and we will definitely stay at Casa Alvarada. It gets our highest recommendation.

Room Tip: We had the suite with a king bed and kitchenette. It was very nice!

Casa Alvarada B&B offers friendly and knowledgeable service, fabulous and imaginative breakfasts, and the owner, also being a tour-guide is a wealth of knowledge about the local area.

Jupiter's English is excellent making for a very smooth stay. He has been very flexible to accommodate our tour needs.

Nikki, our dog, was immediately treated to her own special water and food bowls as well as chew treats and a nice safe yard to explore.

We would highly recommend this establishment and will visit again ourselves to experience Comala during a different season.

Room Tip: Comala may be small but worth a detour from the coast of Mexico to visit for 2-3 days.

We have visited Casa Alvarada many times and highly recommend it in every way. Mara and Jupiter are gracious, generous, and extremely professional hosts. They are well-informed about the whole region and share their knowledge and their lovely home in a special way. We cannot imagine anyone not being impressed with what they offer -- it is not just a "B and B" but a kind of completely bilingual cultural centre in the little town of Comala, which is interesting in itself. Modesty is one of Mara's and Jupiter's virtues, but they deserve praise and more recognition for what they have created.

Room Tip: The two quietest rooms are away from a main street, but we always rent the apartment and love the ea...

We stayed at Casa Alvarada on our way from San Miguel de Allende to Manzanillo. The experience was very comfortable and Jupiter and Mara made us feel welcome. We had booked a sunset tour of volcano and coffee plantation before arriving and we took off right away after checking in...the tour was great!! We enjoyed seeing coffee operations in the area, and Jupiter also brought us to a caldera lake in an ejido as well as a close view of the volcano...where he provided us with lots of detailed information about it. We sat and drank locally grown and roasted coffee while watching the sun turn the volcano several lovely shades of pink/red. Our hosts provided some close by dinner recommendations and a delirious breakfast the next morning. Jupiter also gave us a tip about an event going on in Colima...a parade with over 500 horses and riders. Very special! We'd stay at Casa Alvarada again for sure!

Casa Alvarada offers its clients the opportunity to explore Mexico from the inside, through the vision of your hosts. And I doubt that Jupiter and Mara conceived it simply as a hotel, but more as a reflection of their passion for Mexican art, food, music, literature and of course, their beloved Comala. There are just 3 rooms surrounding a sunny, cleverly designed patio with 2 hammoks, a shaded outdoor double bed on swinging ropes and just enough lawn area to make it seem larger. We stayed in two of the smaller rooms (the largest is a studio apartment fit for a family of 4). Our rooms had comfortable beds, a rarity in Mexico, plus AC, coffee maker complete with instant coffee, nondairy creamer or tea bag. Even a tiny fridge was provided. The Mosaica bathroom was nicely decorated, spacious and immaculate. But the small sink left little room for toiletries - a shelf would have bee helpful. The sink lighting fixture was attractive but it provided insufficient light for shaving or make up work. Plumbing was all functional (not a given in Mexico) with the exception of our last day when hot water was scarce - the place was at full capacity that morning. The bathroom in the Murmullo room was extravagant in size and furnishings. Both rooms were beautifully decorated with warm colors, sophisticated wall art. As in most Mexican rooms, regardless of cost, the lighting is just adequate and there is a shortage of spare electrical outlets for all the gadgets we carry. They even provided an English version of one of the most famous Mexican novels set in Comala, Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo. Highly recommended! As others have noted, Jupiter makes a unique breakfast every morning served in their own dining room. Every dish is interesting and nicely staged. Being served in someone's private home is a rare opportunity, and here you can ask jupiter to describe the Mexican crafts displayed on their walls, to browse a historic collection of photos saved by his mother, of old Comala. We really enjoyed conversing with the Dutch visitors at breakfast and in the courtyard. Mara and Jupiter's girls added a nice family touch and we couldn't stop hugging their dog, Coffee, a masterful escape artiste. Jupiter is a serious guide, who will take you where you want to go, but more Importantly, is willing to engage in real conversation about the places he clearly loves. In sum, this is a place that embodies the true B&B philosophy, where personality and originality are to be sampled and savored.

Room Tip: The Rangeliano room is the most private, and largest. But it is on the street so there is very mino...
