“Excellent place to stay”
Reviewed June 16, 2009

We stayed at the Ostria several years ago (2003 and 2004). We retuned this year (2009) and again thoroughly enjoyed out stay there. The Ostria provides good, clean, basic but comfortable accommodation. The kitchen is perhaps on the small side if you do cook but with so many nice Tavernas close by why bother?? It is a family run hotel and they could not be more helpful and friendly making staying there a real pleasure. The hotel is set back off the road in its own grounds giving it a really peaceful feeling yet being only a minutes walk from the nearest supermarket and Taverna. The pool area is clean and well kept with modern comfortable wooden sun loungers with thick padded cushions. Sadly this seems to be underused. Most likely I suspect because the beach is only 5 minutes walk away. If you prefer the pool to the beach, then you will like this pool area. The pool snack bar serves the usual snacks you would expect to find and the prices are comparable with elsewhere. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. We will certainly be retuning.

Package tours are now run by Thomson and they don’t seem to do a lot of the regional airports that Kosmar used to. But if you can book a flight only (we did from Newcastle) then you can also book the hotel independently through their website at www.hotelostria.gr. A taxi from the airport will cost 15 euros and takes about 10 -15 minutes.

Agia Paraskevi is a quiet resort situated about halfway along the island. There is a good selection of Tavernas all within easy level walking distance of each other. Our favourite is the Green Park. The Alvi is also worth a try in our opinion.
There are also 3 or 4 supermarkets, the closest being right in front of the hotel.
If you are looking for riotous, raucous nightlife, this is NOT the place for you. If you are looking for a quiet Greek resort with a nice beach and friendly locals then this is DEFINITELY the place for you.

I stayed at the Ostria in May 2009 and I could not find a more welcoming, cleaner or a more relaxing place in the whole of Skiathos. Many thanks to all the family there and not forgetting the wonderful Theofilos who will look after all your needs in the bar. I would highly recommend a stay at the Ostria to anyone planning to travel to Skiathos. It is an excellent base to explore the island from. There is an lovely beach just about 100 metres away. along with a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops.

this was the first time i went to Skiathos and i will definatly be going back. I have made friends with everyone there and i have even added them on facebook.
although the rooms were basic, they were extremely clean and the cleaners were very friendly. It was very handy to have a shop at the end of the hotels driveway. the beach is just over the road which was wicked.
i have recommended the Ostria to all my friends and family. 10/10

Ostria is a lovely little complex, good apartments, very clean, good pool for messing about in and a fabulous Greek Night with excellent food and dancing.

The bar only does food at lunchtime and on Greek Night, which does ensure that you go and explore.

The best places to eat are behind the resort (turn right and right just past the bus stop - Avli is the pick of the bunch, Mistrali is quite good too. Pegasus was very friendly too. Avli and Pegasus owners recognised us after our visit two years previously - it is that kind of a resort.

Fabulous beaches all over - we liked the next beach along in the Skiathos direction, easily walkable. Wherever you go on the island, take some bread to the beach and enjoy watching the fish crowd around you as you feed them.

We were planning to go back in a couple of years, but a fortnight after we left, Kosmar/XL went bust, so who knows if another tour operator will take Ostria on - they should as it is much better than most. Hope the Greek family who own it haven't been put out of business, as presumably they will be owed money by Kosmar.

If you read this because another tour operator or booking agent is running holidays to the Ostria, please let us know!

  • Liked — Peaceful, but everything you need is around. Very clean
  • Disliked — Shower room - but aren't all Greek showers like that!

Stayed for 7 days first week in September. Weather was great apart from a 6hr storm which started at 6am and was a real humdinger. stayed cloudy for the rest of the day but by dawn the next day it had passed through and normal service (28 degree sunshine) was resumed.
The apartments were basic but clean and the gardens were regularly tended.
The pool area was very pleasant though seldom used. We booked the ostria because we wanted a pool, but never actually used in it due to the lovely beach at Koukanaries which we visited every day. The coastal road is quite dangerous for pedestrians but buses run its length every 15 minutes and get you around to the beach or into Skiathos town for 1.40euro. They were old and ALWAYS packed to the rafters with the conductors having to clamber inside to attempt to take fares! All a bit uncomfortable but a necessary evil. Quite funny when you're showered, dressed up and off into town for the evening when a hoard gets on late from the beach all sweaty complete with lilos!!!
Skiathos town was bustling and pleasant, lots of little bars and restaurants.
All in all we had a nice quiet pleasant stay.

Hotel Ostria is a pleasant, simple apartment complex with around 20 apts, a small bar and a pool set in pleasant grounds. The pool is a little small perhaps although when we were there it wasn't particularly popular so it wasn't a problem. Air conditioning was an extra and cost Euro 40 a week - expensive. The hotel has its own generator so when a powercut happens the lights soon go on again. All in all, a pleasant enough place to stay.

The disappointment is the village. The main road from Skiathos Town along the cost runs through the village. Most tavernas look out on to the road and to get to them you have to walk along the road - which has no pavement. Fast cars make it scary if you have small children. To get to the beach you have to cross the road and walk across 150 yards of wasteland (litter, rubble, stagnant water...).

The beach itself is good. Golden sand, slightly coarse. It's regularly cleaned. Two loungers and an umbrella cost Euro 8 a day. The water is clear and the bottom shingle/sand. Watch out for the sudden 2 foot waves that appear out of nowhere every few hours. Fun for 8 year olds but dangerous for tots.

We have just returned from two weeks staying at the Ostria and were very impressed both with the apartments their location and Skiathos.
The apartments were spotless cleaned daily and sheets and towels replaced at least twice a week unheard of in greece. The grounds and pool area were really well maintained and were a credit to the owners who put loads of hard work in to keep them up to scratch.
Agia Paraskevi beach is really beautiful sandy and blue flag certified.I hate seaweed and dodgy bits but there was non so the sea was a joy to swim in.Lunch at the Skiathos Princess beach taverna is a must we treated oursleves twice its not cheap but the food is amazing I had the freshest sea bass I have ever tasted and they really push the boat out.The veiw is so beautiful you would think you were on a caribbean island.
The resort itself has half a dozen tavernas spread out along the main road a couple of supermarkets but no real heart .The road is quite busy being the main route through to Skiathos town and to be honest it does detract from the atmosphere in those tavernas. They all served good food though and were reasonably priced we spent in between 30 and 40 euros each evening for a meal for two with wine.
Skiathos town is only about 10 minutes away by bus we got off at bus stop 4 and walked through the streets to the sea front. Our favorite taverna there was alexandros which is in the back streets behind the church they had a guitarist playing traditional music and it was really good and not expesive .The food in 1901 again near the church was superb a real notch up but the price followed it upwards. The views from the windmill restaurant above the old port near bus stop 0 shoulnt be missed the setting is lovely the food is good English style rather than greek and the prices nearly as steep as the steps up to it.
Sorry this is a bit of an essay but I hope its useful
Claire
