We stayed here for one night on our cycling holiday. Shallowdale House is a large modern-build house with three guest bedrooms, guest sitting room and dinning room. The rooms are immaculately styled, clean and well maintained. However, what makes Shallowdale House special are the hosts: their attention to detail is simply sublime. They clearly enjoy people, and display sensitivity to the personalities of their guests that we have never experienced before. Many of the excellent qualities of Shallowdale House have been covered by other reviewers, but one thing has been missed: the hosts excellent cooking is complemented by a most eclectic wine collection – to stay just one night makes choosing the evening’s wine a (happy) problem.

We would most certainly stay here again, and would wholeheartedly recommend Shallowdale House!

Arrived at this beautifully situated mirror to be met by Philip Gill who greeted us by name which was a good indication of our visit to come. Checked in on a lovely antique table with gorgeous views out over the fields in the best part of North Yorkshire. On entering our room, there was a snug area with a writing bureau; a large bathroom with corner bath and separate shower with Elemis and Molton brown toiletries- a very nice touch - and lovely big soft good quality towels and plenty of them. Bedroom with large king size bed which was mega comfortable with crisp clean sheets and blankets. Gorgeous views across the fields from a large window and a little balcony with a seat in it. Thoughtful touches included a bowl of chocolates, binoculars and a torch (not sure what that was for) and a roomy sofa; satelite TV and a lovely Roberts radio. I think there are wonderful views from all the rooms although I did not see them. The room we had was up the stairs and left to the end of the house.

Beautifully presented house with antiques to die for and my favourite pot pourri in the world from Florence. Lovely comfortable lounge looking out into their fabulous garden. I am a keen gardner and saw lots of lovely things in the garden which Anton kindly named for me and which I am now going to purchase. The breakfast was superb (we did not stay for dinner but I am certain it would be just as good as breakfast) with freshly squeezed orange juice, I had full English breakfast with local sausage and bacon and all beautifully served by Anton and cooked by his other half. Husband had poached eggs and bacon, again very good.

This is an incredible find and lots of interesting books. if the weather was bad the room we stayed in had a lovely sofa so you could while away the day with a good book and look at the beautiful view. Cannot recommend this lovely B&B highly enough. what more can you ask for, wonderful hosts, great food, comfy and spacious bedroom and full of little touches. I am now enjoying the home made marmalade they sell.

All the accolades awarded to this upmarket B&B are well deserved. We will return.

This is a superlative place, which cannot be faulted. The room I stayed in had a wonderful view across open fields, and I believe the views from other rooms are equally good. The food is utterly wonderful, and original, with things that you will not find on most menus, other than really upmarket restaurants. The hosts' attention to detail is marvellous, and they make you feel really welcome. You get much better service than in most hotels, and the intimacy of being in someone's house.

As there are only three rooms, you have to like 'being part of the family' to make the most of this place.

Forget about anywhere else if you are in this part of the world, and stay here. It's not far from York by car - half an hour or so - and also near some of the prettiest scenery and villages in Yorkshire.

It is in the Good Hotel Guide, and deservedly so.

We have stayed with Phillip and Anton numerous times over the past twenty years; first at their establisment in Masham, and now at Shallowdale House. Everything at Shallowdale is excellent. The rooms are attractive, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. The dinners are market fresh and delicious. Phlllip and Anton are consummate hosts and do all they can to make Shallowdale House a wonderful place to stay. Convenient to York as there is a park and ride available outside the city but the countryside is really the reason to stay in the area.

We go to Shallowdale House Hotel 2-3 times a year and love it. Only 3 bedrooms all comfortably furnished with magnificent views over the hills -2 with ensuite bathrooms and the third with a private bathroom across the hall. Phillip and Anton greet you on arrival, help with the luggage and if you are around at 4pm ish, they put the kettle on for complimentary tea and homemade cakes and biscuits. Let them know if you want to dine in in the evening and if there is anything you don't like to eat as there isn't a choice -we have never been disappointed. The wine list is well chosen and the house wines are excellent. There are 2 comfortable sitting rooms, plenty of books and an extensive garden -just the place to relax for a few days although lots of guests go hillwalking and York is about half an hour away. The hotel has won lots of awards and well deserves them.
