In the Averyon, near Millau but essentially in the middle of nowhere ugh is this unassuming restaurant that serves the sort of French lunch that you weren't sure existed. All are seated at 1215 and a a steady flow of traditional 'family' cooking follows: some amuses bouches - an exquisite mousse line of mushrooms, then a foie gras (homed made of course), perfectly cooked cod on a creamy bed of mustardy leeks, the a huge platter of veal, baed potato, tomato and celeriac, creme caramel, sorbet - not forgetting a n excellent cheese platter. At 3.30 we left happy and satisfied - all for E45/head including plentiful good local wine. DO book, and don't be misled from the exterior - it really is that good!

Our plan was to have dinner at the restaurant and then to spend the night in the hotel. But this was foiled by a horrifying accident on the autoroute A7 involving 5 vehicles, which created an epic back-up. I called the owner of the hotel repeatedly, and she could not have been friendlier or more accommodating.

Usually the reception closes by 10:00 PM, so when it became clear that we would not arrive till past midnight, she left the keys to the front door of the hotel in a secure location. When we arrived, we quickly got into our rooms and slept wonderfully.

The hotel is simple but charming and, as other have written, an outstanding value. In the morning, we were served an excellent breakfast and then it was time to move on.

My only regret is that we were not able to have dinner, which is apparently one of the best in the region.

As this was our first visit we tried the 16.50 Euro midweek lunch menu. This included some excellent homemade pate as a starter (not even mentioned on the menu), then a whole roasted duck breast, as the dish of the day, accompanied by four imaginatively prepared vegetables (all superb) and a salad with a superb tarragon dressing, all served on a huge long platter on a hot plate, followed by a choice of highly accomplished desserts, PLUS a 1/4 litre of perfectly respectable local wine (or coffee, if we'd preferred a wine from the list). The dining room is delightful, as are the staff. Despite it's relatively "remote" location, it was full. We intend to return for dinner and stay the night - at 50 Euros a room it's hardly worth worrying about the breathalyser!
