“A hidden gem”
Reviewed January 12, 2012

This place was hard to find, but we're glad we did! We loved the ambience of the place and the food was excellent. They make their own beer and it was some of the best we had in New Zealand.

“Out of mussels at Christmas!!!”
Reviewed January 11, 2012

Great atmosphere but disappointed that the only mussels were those in the chowder. With its name and reputation, you would expect that they could find a way to ensure that mussels were on the menu at all times.

The local mussel farmers go on holiday for 2 or 3 weeks over Christmas/New Year. It's frustrating for us too but we have to buy our mussels from certified suppliers, so we haven't been able to find a way around this.

“Dissapointing.”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

We stopped for late (10;30 am) breakfast at the Mussel Inn, but found that they did not have breakfast only some Carrot Cake. The place looked a bit run down and in need of some good dynamic management..it did not live up to its Rough Guide reputation of ‘ you can always get a simple, fresh and wholesome meal’, I got a piece of slightly stale Carrot Cake! the people who arrived after us did not even get that!
