“Great Location - the rest is downhill”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

This is a very basic camping ground that is run by woofers - overseas helpers. While they are really friendly they do not know the area at all.
We camped for two days. The camp site is small, and expensive for what you get - $36 for a couple. We found Wharariki Camp Ground via the Internet. It would be great if Dion(the owner) could add to the website that it is an additional $2 for a 5 minute shower, you have to carry all you rubbish out, and the toilets are long drops. Then people know what they are getting, and there are no surprises.
While we put our tent up we nearly stood in animal poo. Not sure if it was dog poo or sheep poo. Either way it should not have been there. The peacocks while a novelty, are incredibly noisy. Be prepared to be woken up at 6:30am by a very loud scretching noise. This continues throughout the day.
We would not stay here again.
There are some stunning walks and beaches at Wharariki Beach. I would recommend walking to Green Hill Beach - stunning and peaceful. We had the entire beach to ourselves. This is a lovely location, and that is what the camp ground has going for it.

Room Tip: As it is a very windy spot at Wharariki we would recommend a sheltered tent site. Down in front of t...

Basically a nice place in an absolutely marvellous surrounding. The sites are far too small, though (I just managed to squeeze in my chair in front of my van, a car and tent already are too large), and while long drop toilets and a take-your-rubbish-with-you-policy are perfectly fine for a standard DOC campsite for 6$ per night, for a tea-towel sized site in a "holiday camp" for 16$ p.p. and another 2$ for the shower (not exactly bargain basement, too) this is bordering on insolence.

Stayed in a motor home for two nights. The camp is close to the beach and has a great menagerie of animals. The camp is carry out what you carry in and is unspoilt. The owner Dion is very helpful and full of knowledge on attractions and walks. A must see are the seals on the beach. This is the best park I have stayed in and will come back again. Thanks Dion.

We arrived in the night, the location was hard to find at that time, the facilities are basic and a bit overpriced, especially for we had to pay $2 for the hot water for shower. But the surrounding, the beautiful scenery, peaceful, and the experience are priceless..

We arrived to an efficient welcome and as it was the end of the day and pouring with rain we felt we had to stay. Two of us choose the Cabin which is VERY basic with a double bed, very thin mean pillows, a tatty couch and a small bedside table and underpowered lamp...that is it. The "facilities" were a march up the hill and adequate but an addtional $2 for a shower. My main concern is the pricing...$80 for the cabin PLUS $5 for a blanket, no sheets etc, with two of us tht made our stay $90. This is simply poor value for basic accomodation and had the other sites nearby been open we would have gone to them instead. On the other hand the location is terrific.

Room Tip: None of the rooms are worth the money but other than that they are much the same.

We stayed in one of the tent sites here and were greeted by a variety of different animals! (Two horses, sheep, and baby peacocks!). The tent sites were very well maintained, as were the rest of the facilities. They even had a fully enclosed kitchen for everyone to use, which was definitely an added perk as we were tired of eating peanut butter sandwiches 24/7. If you plan on going to Wharariki Beach, you should definitely stay here for a night! And if you like stars, you're in for a treat!

I love this camp site. It is about an hours drive from Collingswood, located near Wharariki Beach and Farewell Spit. It is a very basic campsite with powered sites, some unpowered sites and a couple of cabins. There is a large kitchen dinner, seating outside to enjoy the views, a washing machine, a washing line, a couple of showers (which you have to pay for) and some long drop toilets. There is also a small play park.

The owner is a great guy, he told us about all the different walks, the best times to see the sun set and rise. There are also 2 horses that just wonder around, some chickens and a couple of peacocks.

There are many different walks to do around here. We did two of the walks, once was about an hour return (can be longer if the tide is right), which goes through fields of sheep and comes out on rocks where you can walk back to the campsite along the beach. The other walk is about 20 minutes one way which comes out next to some massive sand dunes and a great big beach. Where if you are lucky seals sleep and seal pups play. The owner has maps of the walks in the office.

There is no dump station or any shops near by so make sure your camper vans waste is empty and you are stocked up on food and water. The owner did offer us water to fill up arr water supplies.

I will be staying here again as it is a great place to get away from the crowds and to just relax on a empty beach. You could also clearly see the stars at night.
