We love to visit the stately homes in England. Montacute is an especially nice one. The Long Gallery is the longest one in England, and it has an outstanding art collection. They are in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery so you get to see some of those art works also. We attended a talk on one of the pieces which was very interesting and informative. The house also had activities for children to do as they toured the house.

The perfect lunch stop on the A303 when travelling west. The house is magnificent, the grounds are full and big enough for a good stretch of the legs and the restaurant serves lovely food! Cannot fault this visit, with a bit of history thrown in too, it's perfect!

Visited this house and gardens while on holiday in Devon. Enjoyed our visit to this house, although fairly big not a lot of the rooms were open to the public. Shame, but what we did see was very interesting. Also another feature was the long gallery where many paintings were on loan from the National Gallery which we enjoyed. Garden was also quite big but not that many plants and trees. Very nicely kept though. We ended our visit in the restaurant where we had coffee and cake...very nice. Would recommend.

We came for the Halloween spook patrol walk through Montacute House's gardens, with our son. There was a good sized group, split into two, with lots of costumed pre-trick-or-treaters in the mix, which gave a good atmosphere. We didn't go through the house, which looked pretty from the outside, but enjoyed walking through the gardens and labyrinthine hedges looking for spooky displays. Our guide seemed a little lacking in enthusiasm for the event, which ended with a slightly odd giveaway of plastic grabber claw toys. It was an inexpensive outing, and a nice walk, though.

Beautiful house and gardens. My favourite part was the Long Gallery full of portraits on loan form the National Gallery. The guides in the Long Gallery are fantastically knowledgeable and helpful (especially a lady called Val). There is also an amazing display of samplers. Outside, the gardens are well kept, just as you would expect at a NT property.
