Carlos Reyes runs an amazing hostal on Poneloya beach, which was practically our private stretch of golden sand in this undiscovered gem of Nicaragua. Only a 20 minute drive from Leon, we had the best of both worlds.
The house itself is gorgeous, and has been meticulously cared for- it's Carlos' family's home which has been converted into guest quarters. There's a huge open air kitchen here which is fully equipped, plenty of hammocks to laze around in, beautiful antique furniture and lots of fresh ocean breeze running through. There are two dormitories with only 4 beds each at reasonable prices, and three private rooms, some with AC, although a fan will do at night. We watched stunning sunsets every day from the wood/ thatch platform right on the beach, pelicans diving- absolutely heaven!
We LOVED Hostal El Pulpo and Carlos who was the most gracious host who provided whatever we needed. We stayed an entire month because life there was just pure relaxation, and we would definitely go back. Don't stay at Las Penitas (which is way more noisy and touristy)- Poneloya is perfect.More
