“Best time in Nica!”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

Already had a great trip in Nicaragua, but this was a dream ending of our holiday! The spot is awesome and the atmosfere great. You can chill on your own, surf, basketball, make nice conversation with friendly staff and other visitors and have fun at night playing games, if you like. Food is very nice! Thank you Aldo, B, Marcos, Charlie, Maylin and Pedro for great 5 days!

I volunteered at the Surfing turtle lodge for three weeks... my overall experience was overwhelmingly positive, I never wanted to leave! Hmm.. Where to even start? This place not only has the best sunsets that I've seen in the country, it also has incredible food, a constant crowd of cool people, tranquillo atmosphere during the days, fun party's at night, AMAZING music, and an overall unbeatable positive vibe. The lodge is located on a deserted island so it's really peaceful and close to nature, but there is so much to do, you can surf, go to the beach, hang out at the swinging bar, play volleyball, surf, horseback ride, and if youre lucky, release baby sea turtles into the ocean! The owners and staff members are all extremely helpful and just plain incredible, they put a lot of hard work and effort into ensuring that the lodge is constantly operating at its full potential, and it shows! This place is worth a million visits and I can't wait to come back.

Suuuuuch a beautiful and unique location! Have to take a boat across a bay and optional horse and carriage pick you and baggage up; awesome. On an isolated beach- no one for miles except for a tiny farm- fresh coconuts mangos herbs and aloe! gorgeous bungalos; private cabins or dorms, solar powered and no electricity until sun down. Surf lessons and a sea turtle rescue project- we even got to release some into the ocean!! Great friendly staff and excellent cooks in the kitchen. Outside bar and couches with great music. Very small and low key- great for a romantic get away or even a small party. Horseback riding and a nightly turtle walk to find turtles laying eggs! Deff would return again =]

Good points - The location is absolutely stunning, the sunsets are the best I have ever seen and releasing the turtles was a fabulous experience. The food, smoothies and frapuccinos were delicious (when they eventually arrived).
We stayed in a cabin which was really cute and generally very comfortable, not to mention right on the beach (although one of the beds was a table with a mattress on and our lights did not work).
Bad points- the service was really slow and sometimes I felt like the staff did not know what they were doing, nor did they care. On christmas day we waited over an hour for our food and did not get to eat together. We had to catch an early bus back to Managua and the hostel were really very unhelpful with organising this. We ended up wading across the water ourselves at 6am.
The fact that the place is quite isolated could be both good and bad, good to get away from it all and enjoy the deserted beach but bad in that you have to buy all your food and drink at the hostel and you could get bored if you were there for more than a few days.
The location is stunning and Poneloya looks nice, I might consider staying in the town next time.

The surfing turtle lodge is a great place to forget about life for a while. The beach is absolutely picture perfect and has great swimming and surfing. The volunteers and staff do a great job keeping the place clean and tidy. The food was delicious, the menu offers a good variety of traditional Nicaraguan food as well as a mix of cultural food. The hostel is solar powered, and they don't turn on their WiFi until after 6 o'clock, which we really liked because, come on, your on an island to get away from everything internet related. Overall, it is a peaceful, beautiful place, and I would highly recommend staying a few nights there. We can't wait to go back!

Beautiful view, long beaches all for yourself, very peacefull. The hostel is a bit overpriced, espacially the food. As you can't bring your own food you're kinda stuck spending alot more money then usual. But it's worth it, at least for a night. The dorm is very spacious and has a tremendous view. The voluteers working at the hostel are very chilled. They're not very busy with servicing you so if you want anything, ask them. Very good place to relax and to be left alone.

Room Tip: the dorm cost $10 a night and is very spacious, the rooms are $35 but you have your own little cabbi...

I had the good luck and fortune to volunteer at surfing turtle for 3 weeks. The staff and other volunteers here were amazing, the waves were enticing, the attitude laid back and the location refreshing. The week days were full of quiet solitude and the weekends a lively party scene with other international travelers. Combine all this with a feel good non profit that helps save sea turtles and you have a place worth spending a few days if not weeks.
