We first stayed at Bamboo on a whim five years ago and we have been back every year since.
Situated mid way along Koh Phayam's beautiful Aow Yai beach, Bamboo is set back just behind the tree line. Whilst not the cheapest bungalows on the island, Bamboo has a range of bungalows from the "Original Bamboo Bungalows" (200 Baht off season / 500 Baht Peak) to the well set up "Bamboo Villa" (500 Baht off / 1200 Baht peak) and depending on occupancy the prices can be negotiable.
We choose the "original Bamboo", which is adequate for our needs. A simple thatch structure with a reasonable size bedroom, attached (cold-read tepid) shower and toilet and a nice verandah in front. Power is from the generator and in the off season only available for a couple of hours during the day and from about 1800 -2200 in the evening. In the high season I believe the power runs 24 hours.
All the bungalows radiate from Bamboo's central Restaurant / bar, which is open from early AM to about 2200 in the evening. Serving a great range of reasonably priced food and beverages, it is the hub of all activities and a great place to hang out and meet people. Staff are great and the service, whilst not lightning fast, is fine and always with a smile. Gems keeps the place ticking and will help you out with any questions, Bin is great and mine host Yuli is also really helpful.
There are free kayaks for guests and surfboards, boogie boards, and snorkeling gear is available for hire with a modest one off fee. There is also free wifi during hours when power is available.
All up, Bamboo is fantastic and Phayam a little piece of Paradise. As yet, it is not too over run and the "big end of town" haven't moved in. As a matter of fact in October / November if you can count 20 to 30 people on the beach it's getting "crowded".
