“wild mexico gulf trip”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

First; the trip from the village of Sontecomapan by small boat is very memorable. Be sure to get some supplys from the small store along the road near the boat launch. Cans of tuna, fruit, water, candy, buns, and anything else that will contribute to your energy level once you get there. The trip across the lagoon is one to use a lot of film, the mountains, the greenery, especially if you have been in the dry interior of mexico, is a treat to the eyes. Then to La Barra, where the lagoon water flows out into the gulf, wide sandy beach strand, palapas, the warm wind blowing, a few small restaurants, very small, one where the owner knows some english, because he was in L.A. briefly, and hurried back to this tiny corner of the world, I could see why.

“LaBarra is our Favorite Place to Visit”
Reviewed May 6, 2012

During our many travels to Catemaco, we can't wait to get back to LaBarra. We have taken a launch from Sonecomapan, but mostly travel via our rental car. I love the drive and we have often seen toucans in the rain forest area. Our favorite restaurant is Estralla's and the owner welcomes us with each return. Our favorite snack is a shrimp cocktail with jumbo prawns served in a large margherita shaped glass filled with cocktail sauce and shredded lettuce plated with orange slices. Delightful on a hot day sipping an ice cold beverage. Freshly caught fish is another favorite. Mostly nationals visit LaBarra and we have been treated with exceptional kindness. The Tuxtla mountain range is absolutely beautiful and a river empties into LaBarra. This is the only beach in Mexico where I have found sand dollars. The local folks are gracious and pedal their local treats (tamales, etc.) which we always enjoy. You won't be disappointed.
