“Everything you would wish for in a holiday home and much, much more.”
Reviewed October 17, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

A centrally located property in quaint quiet French village, with a couple of restaurants, village bakery, butcher and small Spar shop, for all your day to day needs. Sitting in the local bar of an early evening and watching the starlings come in to roost, a real experience. If you like walking this is the place. Canal du Midi is on the doorstep, as is Carcossone. Love the White Compny linen.

“Delightful gated property in tranquil surroundings.”

Delightful gated property in a most tranquil setting, with its own private courtyard, log stove and fabulous barbeque area. We ate out in two good quality local restaurants in Villeneuve Minervois and with easy access to super markets were able to cook-in and enjoy the lovely ambience of the house. We enjoyed bread from the local patisserie and inexpensive local wines.
We had such peaceful sleeps with the shutters closed in a most comfortable bed. Having hired a car we were able to explore the surrounding countryside, vineyards and got glimpses of the snow covered Pyrenesse. Also La Grasse a lovely market village where we visited the Benedictin Abbey and the beautiful Medival city of Carcassone. It is an house we would like to revisit and an area we would like to further explore.

Liked best: The overall style of the property and the peaceful location.

“Beautiful house in real French village”

This is a beautiful house. It is spacious, immaculately decorated and full of character and charm. Comfy beds with crisp white bedding, a generous fireplace in the kitchen with wood burning stove. The whole property has a lovely feel. Villleneuve Minervois is a real French village and large enough to have some useful shops and eateries. Most of the locals did not speak English but all were friendly and welcoming and appreciative of us giving the language a try. The village is pretty and worth wandering around to look at the architecture in its narrow alleys and its local places of interest.

For days out, some research before leaving the UK proved useful. We would recommend taking a car and found our sat nav really helpful. This is a fabulous region – close to historic towns and sites but also to the coast. The scenery is stunning with vast areas covered with vineyards against a backdrop of forested hills or the snow-capped Pyrenees (we were there in February). It was difficult to choose where to go. Our highlights were:

A wine-tasting evening at the house (which I had booked beforehand) led by Wendy Gedney of Vin en Vacances. A lot of fun and some great local wines!

Several trips in to Carcassone to visit the medieval cité, wander around the Saturday markets and have lunch at popular crêperie, Le Blé Noir. An indulgent afternoon at the Moroccan- themed beauticians, Le Boudoir, for a facial and massage and a cultural end to the day at the Theatre Jean Alary to watch a ballet.

A day at the coast to visit Gruissan (with wonderful view from the Barbarossa Tower), a picnic lunch by the water and an afternoon spent at Narbonne plage - a real seaside with a beautiful beach.

An excursion to the south west coast and a short hop into Spain for lunch. On this trip, a drive of about 2 hours brought us to the lovely bay of Banyuls sur Mer for morning coffee. Then up along the coastal road into Spain and to Llansa, a port and marina with stunning views, where we stopped for lunch. In the afternoon, we drove back over the border and along the coast to pretty Collioure and then to the beautiful Argeles Plage for a paddle. An evening spent in Perpignan.

This was a magical holiday. I would go back again and again.

We stayed here shortly after the British owners had bought the property, arranged through a mutual friend. Driving over from the UK and touring through France, we took three days over the journey, exploring as we went. Arriving at the house, we instantly fell in love. Located centrally in the town/village, the house has a lovely walled courtyard garden & the interior is very clean and fresh, with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Friendly neighbours and locals made us feel part of the neighbourhood by the end of our stay. Jean, "salut mon ami". It was great to be able to wander through the narrow streets every morning up to the boulangerie for breakfast croissants & bread for the day ahead. There is also a small supermarket a few minutes walk as well as an excellent butcher. Evening dining was well catered by the Auberge (informal) where every meal was superb (authentic & well priced) and also the smarter restaurant nearby, whose name I forget. Both are within two minutes walk of the house, so no driving, which was great. I think we preferred the family run Auberge, which had a very relaxed atmosphere and is run by a husband and wife. We spent our time exploring the area, Carcassonne, canal du midi, Lagrasse, Aude Minervois, some great walking up in the hills/mountains above and also of course, lounging around in the house. Well worth a visit is the local "Caves Minervois”, again just a couple of minutes walk where the wines of the surrounding producers are sold. The red is fantastic and needless to say we brought a car load back home with us. Also maybe of use to visitors that are driving - the local garage at the top of the village were a great help to us (intermittent car problems) and went beyond the call of duty to ensure we could drive back to the uk without issue. Back to the house, after almost a couple of weeks, we really didn't want to leave. It is a gem, tucked away in an unspoilt community, which gave us a very welcome break. There is stacks to do and see around here, of which we barely scratched the surface - we will without doubt be back!
