“different type of accommadation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014

We had been on a 2 week holiday with our children and wanted to give them a surprise along the way.. what more than spending the night on the Bondi Express. They loved it.. i know it don't sound like a surprise but its a memory they will keep.
We were running late and we got a call from the manager to see what time we would be arriving and if we needed dinner cooked. We were told to ring back when we passed through Port Fairy and he would give us directions to get there.. very thoughtful I felt. He was standing waiting for us when we finally got there and took us to the train.
Although it smelt a bit musty when we first walked in the accommodation was clean and well presented. The heater had even been turned on for us so we wouldn't have to walk into a freezing room. The only complaint I would have to make is that there were no bowls, plates etc in the train but we were able to get them from the camp kitchen in the morning. The view in the morning was superb, we watched the alpacas and the calves playing... what more could we ask for?

Thank you very much for writing a review, these types of reviews help us a lot to keep improving our service & property.
A couple of times now someone has commented on the "Musty" aroma in the room, but I can assure you there's no damp in the room/s. And we fully clean and air them between visits.
You have to consider that these Train Carriage Units are 100 or more years old, they are predominantly timber constructions & all the timber is the original features of the carriage.
I had to take all the wall panels & ceiling panels off when I restored them, I can tell you there's no damp in the walls or ceilings, they're lined with new insulation.
I think the aroma you sense is the timber. Someone familiar with antique timber furniture would immediately recognise this aroma for what it is.
Anyway, we hope that aspect didn't cause you too much discomfort and you still enjoyed your visit.

Unfortunately I have a rather mixed review . Contrary to the other negative reviews I found Colin to be lovely and very friendly . Let me address some of the other points in the reviews to clarify it : 1- Yes the camp kitchen is old as stated in the reviews but charming and perfect for what we needed and more than most places give you
.
2- price was very cheap
3- gardens were lovely and there are lots of animals here
4- the rooms are styled well , have a great view and very quiet . Location is out of port fairy but surely that is a good thing for an escape ?
5- cold well yes you are in the country so expected? But the electric blankets are very toasty and it won't be an issue to sleep with.
The only couple of negatives I have is the shower wasn't working that well on the morning we were leaving - the hot water pressure was an issue and we only got a dribble For the most part. But that very well may be a one off and something that can easily be fixed .
Unfortunately the bathroom wasn't very clean . I read in the reviews prior that you do clean the bathrooms thoroughly so I'm sure that was just an oversight this once . Rest assured the bedding , carpet and everything else was very clean .

Thanks for your enquiry for your review.
Yes, we do clean the rooms very carefully between visits, sorry there seemed to be some issue & we take that on board (no pun intended) & make an extra effort to avoid anything similar again.

We have been staying at Codrington Gardens for a number of years now. We started off staying in one of the train carriages which was a fun experience. For the last 3 years we have stayed in Olive Tree Cottage which is perfect for our group of 4 adults.
Geoff and Yuan always make us welcome and it is fantastic to be able to bring our pets with us if we need to.
Codrington Gardens is a peaceful and relaxing location. The gardens are lovely and it is always a highlight to have a chat with 'Cocky'.

If you want the opportunity to experience the charm and beauty of the 'old red rattlers', then Codrington Gardens has a choice of trains you can choose from. Lovingly restored and meticulously clean, sleeping in one of the train carriages was a welcome treat after the long procession of motel and hotel rooms. The lovely gardens and variety of animals provided a nice environment to unwind and relax. Sitting on our verandah we were able to enjoy watching the new addition to the alpaca family following mum's footsteps. Geoff our host was very helpful and obliging and made every effort to make our stay enjoyable.Highly recommended and a great opportunity to experience something different.

Thanks for your praise, we appreciate it very much.
Baby Alpaca is now the leader of the pack, and very naughty. She takes the other girls on "adventures" making mischief all over the property.
Recently she has taken 4 baby Peacocks under her "wing", we can only imagine (dread) what sort of mischief she's going to lead them into.

A perfect place to relax and enjoy a different kind of accommodation. We stayed in an old train carriage which was fun and something out of the ordinary, rooms were clean and spacious, good bathrooms and a veranda with chairs outside.Such beautiful surroundings with great nature, well kept gardens and lots of animals. The owners were really helpful and welcoming. Beautiful beaches nearby and many great restaurants and cafes easily accessible in Port Fairy.
All in all a perfect place for a relaxing getaway, would love to come back.

Room Tip: Should try the train carriages.

Decided to get out of Melboune at the last minute for the Australia Day weekend. As we wanted to travel with our two dogs our options were limited. Therefore we were absolutely delighted that we discovered Codrington Gardens which, In my opinion, is a hidden gem and the perfect place to relax away from the city hubbub! We stayed for three nights in the Settlers Cottage which was comfortable, restful and suited our needs perfectly. Over the next 3 days we explored the surrounds of the local (dog friendly) beaches,Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Portland and so forth.

Geoff was an exquisite host. He had extensive local knowledge and had many helpful recommendations about what to do and where to go. We wished we had listened to him when he hinted that a restaurant we had booked into may not be up to scratch - but heigh-ho - we will know for next time. He even very kindly agreed to 'babysit' the dogs one evening so we could enjoy a night out.

The gardens are beautifully cared for - and it is clear that a lot of love and hard work has gone into the property. So overall - the perfect place to get away from it all. I look forward to going back.

I visited Codrington Gardens before and felt so relaxed when I returned home I knew it was exactly the break I needed again.

In a short period of time the place has been through a lot of change. The gardens are brighter and more vibrant with a new collection of animals to visit at every turn. Even the fine details in the rooms have been perfected with custom Codrington sheets. There is something fabulous about going back to a place you reminisce about to find it has a few new surprises to offer.

I returned to Melbourne in the same cocoon of relaxation and am definitely looking forward to going back on my next mini break.

Thank you very much, it's exciting for us also when a returning guest reflects on the progress of our work here. Creates encouragement and reward. Love to see you again, lots of work now being focused on the gardens since we've stopped "building".
