Lantern Court Motel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Reefton
Certificate of Excellence

We were recently in Reefton and stayed in a 2 bedroom (4 star) unit at Lantern Court Motel. What a treasure of a motel. I would have to say that the 4 star units at this motel are some of the best motel units in New Zealand. Great attention to detail with regards to architectural exterior design (a modern building with an historic influence), great interior decor (relaxing and cozy colour scheme) and the managers (Helen and her husband) are so helpful, kind, caring and proud of Lantern Court. The impeccably clean 4 star units are certainly the best accommodation in Reefton.

I recently decided to return to Christchurch via Lewis Pass instead of Arthurs' and spent a night in Reefton. I stayed in a 4 star room which was very comfortable although an airlock in the radiator did make it noisy. There are 2 star rooms available if you are travelling on a budget. The owner was very helpful with suggestions of where to eat.

We were recently found ourselves unexpectedly stuck in Reefton when the roads were closed to snow. Julie, the manager at the Lantern could not have been more helpful and kind. We managed to secure the last room in town - luckily as it was snowing and freezing and a night in the car would have been very cold!
We stayed in one of the 4 star rooms which was very comfortable, clean and warm. In contrast, the 2 star rooms looked very old and I would not recommend.
Overall probably the best place in town.

We stopped for one night in early May. The owner, Helen, was really helpful with information about the town, places to eat, walks and also for our onward journey to Doubtful Sound. We stayed in the new section of the motel and it was really pleasant, nice room, comfy bed, everything was scrupulously clean and the location was quiet. Next time we will spend more time in Reefton and certainly stay again at this motel.

Very good quality motel in historic but non too special town. We had a complimentary upgrade with large sitting room and kitchen area and a balcony which sadly we couldn't use because of the weather. Comfortable large bed and satellite TV. Free wife for 30 minutes. Excellent reception.

Room Tip: Have an upstairs corner room with balcony

We stayed here one night. An interesting small town. The Lantern was ok, good beds, showers, balcony to sit out on.

We loved Reefton. It's far enough away from anywhere to retain an air of genuine independence. In some ways, it feels like you are in the wild west, as if the pioneers arrived just last year.

Regarding the Lantern Court Motel, let me immediately dispel the myth that you have to pay extra for a bath plug. The current and friendly managers are puzzled as to the origin of this story. It isn't true. The motel is situated just off the main street in the heart of the town.

Some of the accommodation has been updated to a high standard and some remains "retro". We opted for the retro self-contained studio unit out back which was clean and well-maintained but nevertheless seemed to belong in an earlier age of travel. It was spacious and had everything you needed for cooking but we had a "famous roast" at the nearby Reefton Hotel. There are various other dining options in the town which was the first place in the southern hemisphere to have its own hydro-electric plant. It was ahead of New York City.

I went swimming in the nearby river and there are pleasant walks in the area. The supermarkets are well-stocked as they need to be being so far from either Westport or Hanmer Springs. There's not much in between apart from scenic valleys and agricultural terrain.
