Four of us enjoyed our lunch here. Set price and adequate choice meant we got quality with value. Veal escalopes with pomme puree and mushroom sauce for 3 of us and steak tartare for the other. Desserts worth saving room for, especially the assiette of chocolate. Cafe gourmand a real hit as well.

We were pleased to find Le Mesnil open on a Monday lunchtime and had a very pleasant meal with excellent service. However, the food was a bit ordinary and not what we had expected from a well known restaurant. We have no specific complaints, and the wine was very good and reasonable, but the menu of the day had a bland starter and just wasn't exceptional.

Last friday, we went to "Le mesnil" for the second time.

The restaurant is situated in the grand cru Champaign village of Mesnil-sur-Oger, which is extremely calm in the evening.
The entrance is completely lacking any style, it ressembles a flower shop next to an hospital.
The dining room however is somewhat cosy.

The 4 course menu is very well priced, we all found our choice withing the options suggested. Eating à la carte is considerably more expensive. The dishes are well balanced and tastefull, a bit sober maybe, but sometimes less is more, I guess. Quality is good, especially at this price point.
But the service did manage however to end the evening on a very bad note, which sort of ruined the entire experience. We arrived at the restaurant at about 8:15, and an hour and a half later, at 9:45, we already had our 4 courses and a coffee.
I don't really like to eat at this pace, but OK.

We then asked to have the card for some "digestifs", promptly countered by a "A cet heure-ci, on sert plus!" It was not even 10PM...!!!
I then asked for the bill, which was even more promply answered as "d'accord". The time on the bill showed it was printed at the time we asked for a coffee (9:30).

I really don't get it... just pour 2 whiskeys in a glass, and add 15 euros to the bill... easy money, no? That's the sort of order most restarateurs aim for. But I guess she wanted to close up to go to a party, or don't miss the beginning of a (probaly dubbed) movie.

A shame, we left the place with a very bad feeling.

I guess I won't return either, because food only does not make for a succesfull dining experience.

The two restaurants we usually use in Epernay were closed, so we tried Le Mesnil - a rather plain looking establishment, but we were pleasantly surprised. We visited here with friends (party of 6) in the 1st week in September 2012, and we all enjoyed our meal. The food was delicious, good quantity and well presented. The wine list was good (although not cheap) The service was good, and the restaurant quietly furnished so as not to distract from the food. One low point - the WCs were not quite up to the standard of the rest of the restaurant. However, the parking straight across the road was appreciated. We will return.

This seemed to be one of the few restaurants open in the Cote de Blancs in the middle of August. Having visited a couple of caves in the village, we spotted this rather unprepossessing looking restaurant and stopped the car to have a look at the menu. It advertised a set menu of between 21 and 29 euros depending on the number and combination of courses. We decided to try it out and booked via our Chambre d'Hote. We were not disappointed. The experience was a pleasure from the start. There was just one (delightful) person front of house, but she was more than able to look after the 5 tables of 2, and then one of 7 that arrived a little later. The dowdy exterior opened up into a light and open space, smartly done out, and with white table cloths (though most of the diners were in short sleeves - so it was not too formal). I think all the diners were French - and the large table looked like they might have been on an evening out from one of the local champagne houses. The menu was full of delicious things including starters of tomato stuffed with crab, and escargots in a cream sauce. We both had Cote de Veau as a main dish, which was perfectly cooked, with an exquisite mushroom sauce. Others in the restaurant had steak and fish which also looked delicious. We shared a plate of excellent cheese to finish - though the puddings looked very tempting. There were some good wines by the glass - 4 euro a glass! Interestingly virtually all the champagnes were charged at the same price - 8 euro a coupe; 45 euro a bottle (apart from a couple of silly ones in four figures for those who have that kind of money). Would commend this place in every way. Magnifique!
