“A Little Bit of Paradise”
Reviewed January 24, 2011

Just got back from a week's stay at Les Balcons. The previous reviews were right on. It is quiet and restful. You are close to many attractions, but you have to be prepared to drive everywhere you go. Yes, it can get a little stifling if there's no breeze and you'll have to deal with mosquitos at night. Are only problems were the service and housekeeping. We stayed a week and only had maid service one day. And, while the owners were happy to answer any question you might have, they weren't always around.

My wife and I returned to Les Balcons on a sort of last minute christmas trip to St Martin and stayed in one of the efficiency bungalows on the top level. The price is still great, ~100 euros a night in high season and the facility continues to please. We had a lovely holiday here and enjoyed the visit very much. The best thing about Les Balcons is how close it is to so many things, Orient Bay is 10 minutes or les, Isle de Pinel is 15 minutes, dawn beach is 5 minutes, Grand Case is 15 minutes. The facility is comfortable, the decks are great to sit on and watch the sunset. Just a great location and value for a St Martin trip

Beautiful setting and views but no air whatsoever to sit on the balcony and enjoy the setting or views. We had the large apt. with large balcony and hot tub....however, no ceiling fan. Though we wanted to enjoy the balcony, it was uncomfortably hot and humid, with no breeze. It may have been the time of year, but I think not, the breezes were quite evident on the beaches. I think the marina is protected from the breezes and is, therefore, it is so stifling.

The croissants and pastries ordered for the mornings were just fabulous.

It was not a terrible walk down to the restaurants and bars at Capt. Olivers but not a great walk back!

Need a car if one wants to go anywhere else on the island or even to Dawn Beach. Not easy to get a taxi there since the office is not manned on regular hours.

I was the one who chose this place for our friends and family. I think we had a decent vacation but not what could have been great. Did spend a day at the pool and beach at the Westin, which was really good. Doubt if I will book at Les Balcons d'Oyster Pond again, though we will be back to St. Martin.
It was not a bad experience....just could have been better if there was a little breeze

the place is nice and the owners are so nice too
imazing view from balcons and the rooms with grand terrace are very nice but the other basic
the price is good for st maarten
the only but think is the location
the mst far away hotel in the island
the distances are sort but there is so much traffic that you maybe need one hour just to go for diner or to beaches
the place is soooo far from everything with no so nice beach close by
if location isnt so important then the place is great

We stayed in Oyster Pond for 4 days after visiting Saba. Let me say first that I think Oyster Pond is a great spot to explore St. Martin from. It sits on the French side just over the border, and has a small community around it that provides small stores and restaurants, as well as the marina. If you want larger shopping, Phillipsburg is a very short (10-15 minutes) drive. Orient Bay is a similar distance, the other direction around the island. Having looked at places that were 3x as expensive (Le Petit Hotel), I have to say that Oyster pond, as a setting, was much nicer. Grand Case, and the other cities were pretty dumpy, and better to visit than stay in.

The couple that runs the place were a bit hard to get ahold of (as they were leaving on their own Christmas vacation), but once we got them, they were very nice and helpful, and while English wasn't their first language, communication was never an issue.

The complex is a little on the older side, but the rooms were great. Well appointed, with a balcony looking over the harbor. The kitchenette was perfect, and the shower spacious. Access to the marina was a short walk.

The only slightly unsettling thing was the concern about crime on the island. I've never had a room with a burglar alarm before. Not your simple aluminum tape on the windows kind, either. This one had motion sensors in the room with a special setting for while you are sleeping. I don't think that Les Balcons is in a bad part of the island. Far from it, but crime does seem to be a big concern here.

Parking, in the secure area, was a bit tight.

On our first trip to St. Martin, we visited friends who were staying at Les Balcons. Their "bungalow" - actually, a suite with kitchenette, - was so charming, with a wonderful view of the nearby marina, that we booked a week's stay there as soon as we got home.

There are no fancy amenities here, but it's just our style. It has a "do-it-yourself" atmosphere. You can pre-order croissants for breakfast, and enjoy them while admiring the view (and the colorful birds) from the porch. It is peaceful, off the main drag, but very close to lovely Dawn Beach, as well as to several delightful restaurants. We loved our morning walks along the coast. Hosts David & Carine & their children are warm and friendly, and can give excellent advice about where to go & what to see. We look forward to returning this year from Xmas to New Year's!

Les Balcons d'Oyster Pond is a great vacation rental if you are looking for
an affordable rental on the French side that is convenient to the
entire island. It is however a rental and not a full service hotel, so
don't come expecting hotel service, although Carine does a great job of
providing any necessary activity support. What was nice was the mid
week maid service to change the linen and thoroughly clean the
apartment. The option of having pastry delivered each morning is a nice
touch. Les Balcons is not on a beach but beaches are convenient, there
is a water taxi from the dock to Dawn beach, Orient Beach, Isle Pinel,
and Grand Case are a short and easy drive with none of the island
traffic. The view of Oyster bay is stunning, especially early morning
or evening.
There are several excellent although menu limited restaurants within
easy walking distance. Our two favorites were La Fregate with an excellent continental breakfast, good coffee and her pain ordinaire that is better then most on the island. Dinner here is also excellent and she has an excellent although small wine cellar.
Quai Oest is smaller and not open for breakfast, but also does an
excellent job with a small menu. Both restaurants are neighborhood
bistro's not four star restaurants.
