“Very nice hotel with an excellent manager”
Reviewed December 27, 2011

St Martin was our first stop in our honeymoon and we chose Sol Hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews. The important thing to recognise is that Sol Hotel is not a big sprawling resort or star-hotel. Once you understand this, accept the positive and some negative points that come with this. Then everything will be fine and this is a brilliant hotel. We stayed for 4 out of our 5 nights in the orange room overlooking the bay (sorry cannot recall the name but think the number was 08). It had a fantastic view of the marina and we enjoyed it very much. The location is great as long as you expect a quiet and relaxed setting. It would be best to rent a car though as car rentals are inexpensive and there is no convenient public transport. The small french shop selling fresh baguettes and necessities is also highly recommended!

Separately, and most importantly, the best part of this hotel is the manager - Colette. She is wonderful and made our stay memorable. She recommended that we rent a car, got a car rental arranged through a neighbouring resort, made cab bookings and generally provided excellent recommendations for beaches and travel. She is a very kind and helpful person and the hotel benefits greatly from her management.

Anyway we would recommend this hotel to anyone. It is reasonably priced, has an excellent location and rooms with great views. If you want a big resort / star hotel feel, please look elsewhere. Otherwise, go ahead and enjoy this hotel.

We chose the Sol Hotel based mainly on TripAdvisor reviews, and on our taste for small, informal, affordable hotels and pensions. We found it delightful- modest, quiet, quite clean, and very well situated in a quiet corner of the island; it is also very close (walkable) to a nice little food/wine store and sandwich shop, for croissants and cafe au lait in the morning. Colette is a wonderful person- helpful, friendly, full of good advice; her English is much better than our French! This is not a glitzy resort- don't come expecting one. Very strongly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms we saw seem nice- the ones near the pool are a bit less quiet.

While the manager is very cordial, we found the facility less appealing than most other reviewers. We had booked our reservation months in advance, stated our arrival time and still the A/C was not turned on in our hot room until after we arrived. The kitchen was not as clean as we expected and there was no hot water or dish cloth. There was plenty of hot water in the shower, but the handheld shower head support was broken so it was truly handheld! Equipped with a coffee pot, small stove, refrigerator, toaster and safe, there was no microwave. On our way back from the Quay Ouest restaurant, someone in a car parked in the shadows near the hotel blew the horn. We ignored it until we got out of our car in front of our room and found that a young man had followed us up the hill. He indicated his mother had run out of gas and wanted us to follow him off the hotel property. Realizing he could have more easily asked for help from a security guard at another facility near the parked car, and not wanting to be particularly stupid, we declined. The manager did caution us to lock the room when we were away.

Sol Hotel is a delightful French auberge nestled in the hillside overlooking the marina at Oyster Pond in Saint Martin just north of the border between France and Holland. It is extremely well managed by Colette Berlin who has years of experience in the hotel and rental business. The view is wonderful, the décor impeccable. The charming swimming pool is easily accessed from all rooms and provides the same beautiful view. The hotel is within walking distance of one superb restaurant (L’Oasis) and two very good ones (Quai Ouest and Dinghy Dock bar). Orient Bay, Grand Case, Phillipsburg, and casinos are short car rides away. You can be as close or as far away as you want from American night life. Colette is an impressive combination of gentile and efficient. Her hospitality and genuine friendliness make for an overall ambiance that puts you in a good mood and makes you feel refreshed when you return home. Colette sees to it that, even with the weak dollar, the price is always reasonable. In fact, the quality-price rapport at this hotel is the best I have ever encountered

We just got back from a weeks stay at the Sol Hotel. It was perfect. For price and location this hotel is the best on the island. the view from the patio of the marina is outstanding. The hotel only has 10 rooms so it is very cozy and romantic. We were within walking distance to three restaurants that had excellent food. One in particular- the dinghy dock has the best happy hour. What makes the hotel different from most others is Collette, the manager. She was wonderful, anything we needed or had questions about she took care of. We will be going back. Check it out, you won't be disappointed

We had a wonderful 10 day stay at Sol Hotel. Colette, the owner, is very nice and helpful. Every one of her recommendations from rental car company to restaurants to places to visit were perfect. We had a great view of the marina at Oyster Pond. Colette went out of her way to meet us in her office when we needed to print boarding passes. I strongly suggest you rent a car if you want to see the Island, but driving is not for the faint of heart. And be sure to slow down for the speed bumps!
Colette responded quickly to the e-mails I sent before we went and met us at our estimated arrival time. As the hotel is small, she is not always in the office, but goes out of her way to be there when you ask. Oyster Pond (really a bay, with a small opening to the Ocean) does not have a beach, but several nice ones are nearby. Don't miss the Butterfly Farm. Early morning is the best time to visit it. Nana's is a great small eatery for breakfast and a two minute walk.

Wow...leaving the cold to go celebrate our 100th birthday (my husband and I will both be 50 this year) on this beautiful island couldn't have been better! The Sol Hotel was away from all the hustle and bustle in an almost residential neighborhood, yet easily accessible to all the activity. Colette, the owner, was so warm, friendly, and more than accommodating. By week's end, she felt like family. The rooms were simple, yet clean and the view was gorgeous! We would certainly go back again and again...
