“Home Away From Home”
Reviewed May 21, 2012

We love East End, Grand Cayman! It's so quite and peaceful and we've met some of the most friendliest people there! The rooms in Phase II ("pool side") of the Compass Point Dive Resort are spacious and very clean. We love the ground floor for easy access to the pool. The diver's night all you can eat buffet dinner (delicious)was highlighted by a wonderful collection of brief marine life videos.

We love Compass Point and Ocean Frontiers. We stay in a one bedroom condo that overlooks the dock. Can't be any more convenient. Everything we need is right here. Restaurants close by if you want to go out. Well supplied kitchen if you want to cook in. We don't spend much time in the room but it has free Wi-Fi and full entertainment center. The dive, room and car package is an economical way to do the trip. I'm a macro photographer and the East End of Cayman has lots of macro subjects.

Room Tip: Oceanfront 1 & 2 bedroom units have the better views. Phase II units across the street are somew...

We love this place. It's was our 4th diving trip with Ocean Frontiers and our second stay at Compass Point, and we would not now go anywhere else on the island for our diving trip. The rooms (apartments) are spacious and clean, generally well furnished and equipped - though the hi-fi equipment is somewhat outdated (still no iPod dock, which surprised me, though there is a WiFi connection). But that's a very minor - almost irrelevent point - who needs music when you can sit on your balcony with a book and watch a full moon reflecting on the boats and calm water of the lagoon all evening? The kitchens are fine for simple cooking; work surface is a bit limited, but there is a full oven and (old fashioned, but functional) hob, microwave, coffeemaker, kettle, toaster and blender, plus huge refrigerator with small freezer. It's so easy to get up, make breakfast and head down to the dock - all of 50 yards away - for morning diving. One critisism of the apartments, though. The mattresses are too soft, feel cheap, and are not supportive. I actually fell out of bed on my first night as the mattress edge was so soft I simple rolled off it as I stretched to switch off the light (no damage done, fortunately!) Bearing in mind a lot of the guests at Compass Point are not in the first flushes of their youth, comfortable beds are really important especially when you are out diving most of the day - the equipment does put a strain of vulnerable older backs. Perhaps Compass Point should follow the example of a couple of the dive resorts we have stayed at in the Maldives which provide fairly firm mattresses but then offer the guests the option of a soft memory foam "topper" if they want it. I would also like bigger towels in the bathrooms - but I guess this is just a British thing. Most American hotels seem to supply tiny towels too!

Ocean Frontiers' diving services are brilliant - probably the best dive operators we have ever dived with. Great staff, superficially very laid-back and friendly making diving trips great fun, but beneath all the banter they are very professional and reliable, and so helpful. And the Green Shorts Challenge is a fun innovation that adds interest to the choice of dive sites each day.

If you want crowds, fast-food joints, over-priced wall-to-wall luxury hotels and fancy restaurants, hoardes of cruiseship passengers and over-dived sites don't go to Compass Point. If you want peace and quiet, professional diving services and brilliant dive sites, go to the East End, stay at Compass Point and dive with Ocean Frontiers.

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms have the best views, I believe the new aparments across the road are a bit bigger...

We returned to Compass Point for 9 days - April 27 to May 2, 2012. We stayed in the two bedroom, 2 bath condos that were ocean front.

The rooms were very nice. The views from our oceanside balacony were spectular. The full furnished kitchen was great and had everything we needed. A great coffee maker for our morning cup and a blender for the afternoon drinks.

Compass Point has a recently completed Phase 2 addition. This addition has added a fantastic pool and hot tub. It is located immediately across the street - about a 30 second walk. Two gas grills were also very nice to grill our fresh red snapper we purchased from the fishermen in George Town.

The beach in front of the condo was in very good shape. Several nice covered loungers were available. The in-room free wi-fi worked great and allowed me to keep in contact with family and work.

Compass Point has a weekly Diver's Night buffet dinner on Wednesday. Great local Cayman dishes - all you can eat for just $20 US. A great value and eating pool side was a lot of fun.

Overall, Compass Point is a tremednous value. We are already planning our next trip back!

Room Tip: The two bedroom units are great for 4 adults or up to 6 (two Murphy wall beds are in each unit). I...

Compass point was a condo with 2 bedrooms and a full kitchen. the condo was very spacious and overlooking the ocean. the property was very clean and the staff very polite and helpful. the dive shop and it's boats were awsome. there are lockers to keep your stuff down on the dock so getting ready is a piece of cake. the rental comes with a car as part of the price and we found it to be a very affordable package. It is close to many restaraunts and bars if you choose to go out. It is a little ways to the main town of grand Caymen so if you want to spend most of your time on 7 mile beach it is about a half our drive ( only because you cant drive all that fast). the dive to sting ray city was great and is highly recommended as they doe not go where all the tourist boats are.( same general area but away from the crowds and there are plenty of stingrays to go around). would definetely go back there again. oh the beach in front of the hotel is great as well and they do have a pool overlooking the ocean.

Room Tip: most rooms face the ocean although they were adding on buildings on the other side of the road so ma...

They gave us a room on the 3rd level by the dock. If you stay on a higher floor, you'll get better views - but you'll also have to haul your suitcases up the stairs, no elevators.

For some reason, the beds were not comfortable. I had trouble sleeping the entire time we stayed. But I can't put my finger on why. I love having the convenience of the washer/dryer and the kitchen. Everyone here is friendly and the convenience of having the dive operation based out of the same establishment can't be overstated. The diving is amazing and close by. They'll take you to walls and swim throughs.

The only downside is their dive locker. It's not well ventilated and your gear will start to stink up after a few days. They need to put fans or something in there, as the humid air will not allow the gear to properly dry. I also found salt crystals on my regs.

But all in all, if I came back to Grand Cayman, I'd be very tempted to stay here again.

I took my husband to Compass Point to celebrate his birthday this year and we can't wait to go back! The codos are great, the staff is very helpful, and the dive operation was top notch. First of all I have never had a better check in experience, I had made the reservations and paid in full over the phone with Leslie so when we arrived all we had to do was get our stuff and move in. After being showed our room we were told that we would have two crates delivered within the hour to our door. We were to put all of our dive equipment in these crates and someone would come up and get them. Our kits would be on the boat and set up for us for the next morning's dive. That blew me away! We did this and never had to worry about our dive stuff until the day we left for home.

I feel like I should advise you to get your groceries on the way to the east end, there are NO stores on this side of the island other than a small convenience type store. Since we had a full kitchen in our condo we were able to make quite a few of our evening meals and all of our breakfasts in our place. This is a very independent style vacation, you take care of yourself and they take care of all your diving needs. Don't expect a hotel style trip here, there is no room service. There are a few great restaurants nearby though so you certainly can get a break from cooking.

First we were in a 1 bedroom oceanfront condo, this was a great setup but we did find the kitchen to be a little small and it was right next to the area where they refill the tanks. This was a little loud if you are trying to relax on the balcony after a morning of diving. However, when they say oceanfront they really do mean it, every single oceanfront room has a spectacular view! Now this first room we had is set up so that the living area looks out at the ocean and the bedroom is in the back of the unit. Certainly just fine and had a great price. We on a tour of the other rooms when we asked to see them and we were impressed with the other options. The One Bedroom Deluxe condo was located on the other side of the pool so it was not near the air compressor and dive prep area. The kitchen was twice the size and the bedroom was also on the water along with the living area, these two rooms both come out to the large balcony. This unit also has a "lock out" second bedroom so you can book it as a two bedroom, with the second bedroom in the back of the unit with it's own bathroom. We upgraded to this room but only used the one bedroom option. We were thrilled with this upgrade and loved waking up with the sunrise and sat on the quiet balcony every single day. Across the street there are the newest units, they have granite counter tops and new fancy furniture and are very homey and nice. There is also a pool and hot tub in front of these units. While you can see the ocean from these units the view is not as amazing as from the oceanfront units. My only disappointment would be with the linens on the bed, they could use to be replaced. They were certainly clean but the comforter had some stains on it, not huge but that is something that bugged me a bit. I certainly wouldn't let that keep me away!

Diving: Just as I said our stuff was waiting for us on the boat each day, we took our computers and camera stuff with us but the rest was rinsed and hung to dry each day by the fabulous staff. There were usually about 10 -12 divers on the boat and we were put into two groups, each with a dive master. You do have the choice to go unguided as well but we stuck with the group. The dive masters are very familiar with the dive sites and give you a great presentation about each dive. There is Nitrox available and each boat has a fresh water dunk for cameras only. When you leave the boat there are also dunk tanks for your gear and cameras. Surface intervals are on the boat and you are supplied with orange slices, ginger biscuits, fresh water and lemonade. Boat rides were from five minutes to twenty at the most, and are very comfortable.

Be prepared to pay top dollar for both your groceries and dining out. Also be sure to check your bill when dining out, every place we went to already added in the tip, you don't want to end up double tipping! Using US money is a little tricky, each time we did we were shorted when given change in Cayman money. Better to use local currency or your credit card to avoid the swindle!

**Water on the island is certainly drinkable but be prepared for it to have it's own unique (awful) flavor. We brought a Britta filter bottle with us and used it in our room to filter the water for drinking and it was great. When at a restaurant they offer you tap or bottled water, your choice of course but the tap water is pretty bad. That filter bottle certainly was worth every penny!

Thank you for the review- just one update, that we are planning to move the Compressor that fills the dive tanks to another location, further away from the guest rooms. We expect this to happen in June or July 2012.
