Lets make one thing clear. There is very little reason to sleep in Kota Belud. It was on our way to a resort and we thought it would be a nice place to see the sunrise and the Mount Kinabalu. But that was a bit of a disappointment because the hill doesn't give a good view because of the trees and bushes.
In the centre of town there are three options. The U Hotel (68 RM single, 108 RM double), the Kota Belud Travellers Lodge (40 RM and up) and the Amber Lodge (38 RM and up). We've seen the rooms of all three and we thought about taking a taxi to another town because all are horrible. The Amber Lodge is cheap but what a dump. Very old, damp, stinky rooms which consists of only an old bed. The Kota Belud Travellers Lodge offers little more, the deluxe rooms are slightly better around 70 RM. But all very old, damp and with a musky smell. The U Hotel is probably the best option. A single room (shared bathroom) for 68 RM, a deluxe double for 108 RM. All airco but no windows or ventilation on the singles. Shared bathroom was full with huge roaches. After asking the staff to clean the bathroom, the roaches showed themselves in numbers again. The second cleaning party was enough. The room looked oke but the classic used condom showed itself in full sight. Looking for another room roaches were running loose. To be fair, the manager tried to make everything right and was helpful for onward travel call's. But during our 1 year Asia trip, this was one of our worst experiences.
